Omschrijving
Inleiding:

Description
Introduction:
Former eight-class Public school from 1916 built in Transitional architecture. Designed by architect P. van der Velden. The school lies, with the exception of the west gable which stands on the property boundary, freely on the plot. The front or north gable lies on the Stationsstraat separated by a fence with forecourt. In 1930 it became the "Nazarethschool" a school for Catholic education led by the Congregation of the Brothers of Our Lady of Lourdes (Brothers of Dongen). These have maintained their convent on the west side of the school to the present day. The school is now in use by the Stichting Volksuniversiteit.
Description:
School building executed in brick with rich application of natural stone with detailing amongst other things at wall claddings of gable ends with Art Deco features, wall openings around windows, entrance portico and basement. The brickwork consists of machine brick laid in English bond. The object has two storeys with attic storey under slate covered composite hipped roof, with a pineapple finial at the corner points. The front gable contains narrow central and wide corner risalits. The classrooms have two, sometimes three coupled windows with in the fanlights and in the edge of the lower window a small glazing bars. The wall openings on the ground floor have natural stone segmental arches on the upper storey straight lintels, both with an incised classical egg moulding. The round-arched main entrance section contains natural stone twisted colonettes. The roof has broad gutters on carved gutter brackets. In front of the school a frontal stoop and an ornamental iron fence in Art Nouveau style, between four masoned stone pillars with capping between which a small protective wall with saddle back. Internally granite corridor floors and stairs with balustrades. The classrooms and panel doors have remained intact.
On the square behind the school two beech trees from the construction period.
Valuation:
The former public school is of general interest. The property has cultural-historical interest as an example of cultural and spiritual development, namely the development of public education in the Catholic south at the beginning of the twentieth century. It is also of interest as an example of the typological development of the corridor school. Architecturally it is important because of the representative style, the detailing and as an example of the work of architect Van der Velden. The building is valuable because of the integrity of its exterior. It is a rare example of a representatively detailed public school in a Catholic region.
