Omschrijving
Inleiding:

Description
Introduction:
PERRON CANOPY with WAITING ROOM annex SERVICE BUILDING from 1912 at Geldrop station. The design is by architect ir. G.W. van Heukelom.
The railway line lying west of the heart of Geldrop connects Eindhoven with Weert. The line was already approved by the Second Chamber in 1904. Because the railway line initially crossed a marshy area it was laid on top of a dike body. Originally east at the foot of the dike in front of the canopy lay the actual station building, which was demolished in 1974.
Directly north of the current station exit lies a pedestrian tunnel under the track and canopy through it, which connects the eastern part of Geldrop with the western part. The tunnel was constructed in the nineteen seventies. It is not part of the protected monument.
Description:
The object consists of nine iron bow trusses with a cantilever of 3.70 metres on both sides. They stand at a distance of 9.00 metres centre to centre. The truss legs themselves are 5.00 metres apart. The trusses are coupled in the longitudinal direction by seven lattice girders. Of these there are two main and five secondary girders. The entire iron construction is riveted. Of the trusses three are so-called half-trusses. The roof construction consists of a shallow gabled roof covered with roofing felt, lying on wooden boarding of beaded sections on purlins.
Under the perron canopy lies the service building, which consists of a signal box, pointsman's and waiting room now with station ticket windows. The pointsman's room has oriels that have views over the railway line. Also located here is the station exit via a staircase under the railway line through to the adjacent Parallelweg. The service building is executed in brick laid in English bond. Around the windows and door openings granite is used abundantly. Fanlights of the windows have a small glazing bars. The staircase is also of granite with walls of white facing brick. Around the staircase on the perron an ornamental iron balustrade.
Valuation:
The perron canopy with annexes is of general interest. The building has cultural-historical interest as an example of socio-economic development and the subsequent opening-up of the south of the Netherlands and as an example of the typological development of the small station on the Eindhoven-Maastricht line. It is architecturally-historically of interest because of the austere style and the combination with evenly designed technical details and as an example of the applied combination of building elements; it is also of interest as a small station in the oeuvre of architect and engineer Van Heukelom. The building is also of interest because of the integrity of its exterior. It is rare because of its design and construction and as a small station has in the meantime become rare.
