Description
Introduction:
R.C. CHURCH in Neo-Gothic style, dedicated to Saints Maria and Brigida built between 1879-84. The design is by architect H.J. van Tulder.
It is a three-aisled cruciform church with tower and roof turret under gabled and mansard roofs with slate covering.
Description:
The building has a nave of five bays, a transept of one bay with a dwarf transept and a choir of two bays with 5/10 closure and side chapels, constructed of brick.
The tower has four tiers. The first contains the main entrance with a portal with small columns and archivolts and in the side facades entrances in shallow spare fields closed with a stepped segmental arch. The second tier has a three-part window for the organ gallery and in the side facade three-part blind niches. The third tier has five niches of which two are slightly higher. The bell-gable tier has three-part sound openings above which is a clock face. The spire transitions from square to octagonal and has a wide brick decorative moulding. Diagonal buttresses. Nave, transept and choir are simply detailed, with three and two-part pointed-arch windows, in the clerestory flanked by niches. Profiled mouldings and outlined scaffolding holes under the gutters. The side aisles have screen gables with stepped gables.
Internally the building is entirely plastered and vaulted with brick cross-ribbed vaults executed in fair-faced masonry. The elevation is two-part. Profiled bundle pillars rise into the transverse arches and vault ribs. Above the transverse arches, below the clerestory windows flanked by niches a tier of five blind niches. On the tower side an organ gallery with fretted balustrade and saint figures. In the choir bay the arches are filled with a two-part partly blind arcade. The transept arms have three two-light windows with a rose window. The confessional boxes have three gables. In the choir closure there are two-part tall windows above blind niches. The church is entirely polychrome and possesses a rich neo-gothic inventory of which only the pulpit is missing. This polychromy binds the entire interior together and was executed by P. Bockholts from Eindhoven (between 1890 and 1900) with figurative paintings by A. Brouwer from Hilversum. The wall surfaces have block courses with horizontal mouldings and under the plinth the usual curtain imitations. On the small columns zigzag and herringbone motifs, in the fields above the arcades leaf motifs. The vault fields are trimmed with coloured brick. The rear walls of the side chapels have monograms. In the nave the painted Stations of the Cross, in the chapels the Dogma of Maria Immaculate Conception and the Holy Family on the way to Jerusalem. In the choir the Adoration of the Magi, John the Baptist and the Lamb of God, Emmaus and the Doubting Thomas. The high altar (1884-85) consists of a tall retable with canopy in limestone flanked by two angels. In the side chapels baldachin altars of Maria Immaculate Conception and the Holy Family (1884-90) constructed in architectural forms by P. van der Mark from Eindhoven. In the crossing figures of the Sacred Heart, Barbara, Willibrordus, Norbertus, Anna, Maria, Lucia, Leonardus, Brigida and Gregorius. Baptismal font (1898). Neo-gothic oak benches.
Valuation:
The church is of general importance. The building has cultural-historical importance as a particular expression of the development of Catholicism in the south and is also important as an example of the typological development of the village church in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. The building has architectural importance through the style and detailing and is of art-historical importance through the rich detailing and painting of the interior. The building is also important as an example of the oeuvre of architect Van Tulder. It has ensemble value because of its particular setting, linked to the growth of the church village Zesgehuchten. It is important because of the rarity of the polychrome interior.
