Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The Urkersluis is a lock between the mouth of the Urker Vaart and the harbour of Urk on the IJsselmeer. Construction of the lock began in 1938, as did work on the nearby Vissering pumping station and a row of service cottages. The lock, together with the associated LOCK KEEPER'S COTTAGE, the timber-beam shed and the pumping station were built to a design by architect D. Roosenburg and engineers of the Zuiderzeewerken Service, on behalf of Rijkswaterstaat. The lock and the associated buildings were completed in 1941. With the draining of the Noordoostpolder and the completion of work on the Urkervaart in 1942, the lock as well as the nearby pumping station could be put into service. The lock keeper's cottage served as accommodation for the lock keeper, who from this position could operate the lock gates.
The building lost its original function in 1989 when it was replaced that year by a new control building at the bridge. Both this control building and the bridge fall outside the scope of national heritage protection.
Description
The lock keeper's cottage, situated on the south-east side of the lock chamber, was originally intended as accommodation for the lock keeper. The cottage, constructed from a rectangular plan, has a concrete base and walls laid in English bond under a projecting concrete roof covered with red tiles. This is comparable to that of the timber-beam shed, but is boarded in at the underside. On the street side, the cottage has a new aluminium door with side lights in the concrete base. The space behind this currently contains sanitary facilities. The corner window at upper left has renewed aluminium frames and forms a continuous unit with the window in the gable facing the lock and the side elevation facing the harbour. The window section, like the other gable openings, stands under a rolled cornice and is provided with a continuous concrete sill. The gable on the harbour side further contains an aluminium door adjoining the aforesaid window section, placed against the inner corner of a shrinkage crack. This right gable section is provided with a round window and an aluminium door. The rear gable contains three tall aluminium windows.
