Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The Urkersluis is a lock between the mouth of the Urker Vaart and the harbour of Urk on the IJsselmeer. Construction of the lock began in 1938, as did work on the nearby Vissering pump station and a row of service houses. The lock, together with the associated lock keeper's cottage, the sluice gate timber storage shed and the pump station were built by order of Rijkswaterstaat, designed by architect D. Roosenburg and engineers of the Zuiderzeewerken Service. The lock and associated buildings were completed in 1941. The sluice gate timber storage shed, built in a functionalist style, was intended as storage for wooden sluice gate timbers, which served to protect the western (IJsselmeer side) lock gates in case of emergency and as a closure of the lock chamber during maintenance work on the lock gates. A steel emergency shutter has, however, taken over the function of the sluice gate timber storage shed.
Description
At the Urkersluis there are two small buildings, both of which have lost their original function. The larger of the two was built as a sluice gate timber storage shed. It is constructed from a rectangular floor plan in brick (Flemish bond) within a steel frame and has a concrete plinth. It stands under a cantilevered concrete gabled roof covered with red tiles and fitted with a brick chimney. The roof cantilevers further towards the ridge and has an underside edge of riveted metal and a soffit with cassette-shaped recesses. The three-bay long facades are fitted with round steel windows above a concrete weathering course. The gable on the harbour side is also fitted with iron pegs and rings between the roof and the windows. This gable also rests on a concrete beam supported on heavy piles. The gable on the lock side is divided into three by the iron frame structure and fitted with two flush-shutting windows between cantilevered concrete lintels and also concrete sills. The cottage is accessed via a concrete staircase. Construction, design and material use are closely related to those of the nearby pump station.
Valuation
The sluice gate timber storage shed is of general importance because of its cultural-historical and architectural-historical value.
- The shed has cultural-historical value as part of a complex that is an important link in the development of hydraulic engineering structures in the Netherlands and because its construction marked the end of Urk as an island and the beginning of the Noordoostpolder.
- The shed has architectural-historical value because of its specific design characteristic of the period of construction, the use of materials and construction, and as a characteristic work within the oeuvre of a prominent architect, D. Roosenburg.
- The shed also has ensemble value because of its particular visual and functional coherence with the lock and the other components of the complex.
- The shed is moreover of importance because of its recognisability and the great degree of integrity of the exterior.
