Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
Building B was originally built as a REGIMENTAL OFFICE in Expressionist style and is located between the Generaal de Bonsweg and the parade ground, on the northern side of the site. The building dates from 1939 and, due to its function, like A (6) and C (1), has slightly richer decoration than the other buildings. In 1992 the building was renovated and it will be taken into use as an office for the barracks commander.
Description
The two-storey building has a composite floor plan, which broadly consists of a T-shaped main building with a single-storey L-shaped extension on the south-eastern side and a terraced, single-storey rectangular extension on the north-eastern side. The building is covered by hipped roofs with improved Dutch tiles. The façades are, as elsewhere, built in various colours of brick and are articulated by ashlar strips. Like the other buildings, the one-and-a-half-brick walls also feature fixed doors and iron window frames with glazing bars and opening fanlights and lower lights. In the eastern façade a panel door under a round arch.
The higher two-storey main building stands out due to richer detailing. For instance, on the (northern) street side of the building across the full width of the storey, iron opening doors, round lights and a French balcony with wrought-iron railings are applied. The staircase in the western façade has lights over the full height and an underlying portico with wide overhanging canopy and a brick box. The interior has been renovated but has retained various original elements, including the staircase.
Valuation
Barracks Building B is of general interest. It has cultural-historical importance as an example of an administrative and strategic development, namely the establishment of a barracks as part of the Peel-Raam Line, an important component of national defence, and as an example of the typological development of barracks in the interwar period. From an architectural-historical perspective it is important because of the style applied by the engineering departments and because of the use of materials and rich detailing. It is important because of its situation, connected with the strategic development of the ancient fortified city of Grave. It is important because of the integrity of interior and exterior.
