The register's description

Inleiding

Introduction

Building C was originally in use by the WATCH COMMANDER and the MEDICAL SERVICE. It dates from 1939, displays Expressionist forms and is in virtually original condition.

Description

The two-storey building has a U-shaped floor plan and the one-and-a-half-brick walls are constructed in different coloured brickwork. The building is covered by a composite hipped roof, laid with improved Dutch tiles and has a substantial overhang. The facades are articulated with concrete bands and mouldings. Against the northern facade a planter filled with gravel, drawn across the entire width of the facade, is built. Against the eastern facade stands a canopy on concrete columns. On the northern side, next to the gate (2), this gallery is closed off by the semicircular single-storey bay window under a flat roof of the watch commander. The building has clamped doors and frames with an iron glazing bars and a small opening fanlight and lower light.

Striking elements in the building is the three-storey stairwell on the eastern side. This is provided above the round-arched entrance section with a leaded glass shaft placed diagonally across the entire height, crowned by a clock (Koninklijke Eijsbouts, 1939). The southern facade has a simple entrance section under a canopy, consisting of a clamped casement door. The southern rear wing is, in contrast to the northern and eastern wing, single-storey. The text applied to the street side against the northern facade with the name of the barracks: "Generaal de Bons / kazerne", is, as with the other barracks in this series, made of hand-forged, partly openwork iron letters.

The very soberly executed interior has been renovated but retains the original layout. Important elements include the original concrete floors, wooden roof trusses and the remaining panelled cupboard doors.

Valuation

Barracks building C is of general importance. It has cultural-historical importance as an example of an administrative and strategic development, namely the establishment of a barracks as part of the Peel-Raam Position, an important component of national defence, and as an example of the typological development of barracks in the interwar period. From an architectural-historical perspective, it is important because of the style applied by the engineering bureaux and because of the material use and rich detailing. It is important because of its setting, connected with the strategic development of the ancient fortified city of Grave. It is important because of the integrity of interior and exterior.
