Inleiding

Description
Introduction
CHURCH BUILDING of the parish of SS. Fredericus and Odulphus, built in 1925 in Chalet style according to a design by B. Buurman and furnished internally with wall paintings by Chris Lebeau and main component of the church complex. The foundation stone was laid on 23 September 1925.
After initially receiving a commission from the church council of the Old Catholic Church for the altarpiece, Lebeau was asked in 1926 to paint the entire church. The fresco painting of a large standing Christ in the altarpiece was completed when the church was consecrated on 3 May 1926. The painting was shortly afterwards removed due to moisture problems. The rose window above the altarpiece was also removed, because Lebeau could not paint against it when the sun shone and the window leaked. In April 1928 Lebeau began for the second time to paint the apse and the other empty surfaces in the church. This time he painted a seated Christ in the altarpiece. This would dominate the four evangelists on the western wall more than a standing figure. At the request of the pastor, Lebeau kept the paintings around the Christ figure otherwise restrained. The decoration programme was devised by Lebeau himself. Given his political preference and his unfamiliarity with Christian doctrine this is most exceptional. According to his entirely personal convictions he has interpreted the Bible. In the paintings, therefore, traces can be found of his preference for anarchists, among others in portraits of Gandhi, Lenin, Vanzetti and Sacco. Lebeau made predominant use of realistic figures. The people in the crowds are moreover taken from daily life and dressed neutrally in the fashion of the nineteen-twenties of the twentieth century, rather than the oriental clothing that was customary in the church or the symbolic emphasis that Lebeau had previously placed on his figures.
Description
The white rendered facades of the hall church are built above a hard stone finished plinth under a projecting gabled roof with red tuile-du-Nord tiles, gutters on brackets and wooden wind braces. Timber framing directly below the roof gutters and in the gable ends. The entrance in the northern gable end in a built-out church portal under a gabled roof, the right-angled apse on the south side likewise in an extension under a gabled roof.
In the western long side facade five round-arched windows containing clear stained-glass with coloured abstract decorative borders. The two outer windows are three-light windows. The eastern long side facade adjoins the villa and is therefore blank. In the front facade a large three-light window in the gable and small round-arched windows in the portal. On the west side of the portal is the entrance, a batten door under a segmental arch. Hard stone drip moulds under the windows.
Midway on the ridge a tapering roof turret with a bell and a copper helmet roof with weather vane.
Interior
Wooden, largely open roof truss structure with iron tie-rods, based on the principle of the collar-tie roof. The roof trusses rest on hard stone corbels. At the front of the church (north) a portal, with a choir gallery above it. In the interior of the church yellow brickwork is used. The walls are articulated by plinths of glazed bricks, masonry wall linings and pilaster strips. Roughly rendered surfaces between the pilaster strips and above the wall linings. String courses above the niches with hot water radiators and below the rendered surfaces. A right-angled batten door under a lintel is incorporated between the portal and the hall church. Baked tiles on the floor. Wooden benches, a polished granite altar in the altarpiece, a hexagonal granite font hanging on the west wall to the right of the altar and a wooden pulpit with sounding board to the left of the altar (east). At the underside of the sounding board: the Holy Spirit in the form of a copper dove. All rendered surfaces are painted by Chris Lebeau in the Keim waterglasspainting technique. Above the entrance, on the underside of the gallery Christ as the Good Shepherd is depicted with crowds of believers on either side in a frieze. Above the altar as Pantocrator with above it the Holy Spirit, which sends rays out to angels and large groups of people. Around the windows in the western facade the four evangelists with corresponding symbols and crowds (the working class, semi-intellectuals, those enjoying the good of the earth and the intellectuals). Faith, hope and love form the subject of the paintings in the blank wall opposite the windows. On the wall behind the pulpit: Via Dolorosa (the Stations of the Cross), a Celebrating Priest and the Veil of Veronica. In the stairwell Saul and David and the Ladder of Life, which begins with an unborn child. Singing and musical groups on the walls of the choir gallery. Above the stairs on the choir gallery: Christ and his followers.
Valuation
The Old Catholic Church is of general importance because of its cultural historical value as an expression of spiritual development and because of the special place that the wall paintings in the church occupy in the iconology of ecclesiastical art. The church is furthermore of general importance because of its architectural historical value due to the Chalet style of the exterior and the high quality of the wall paintings of Chris Lebeau in the church and the special place that the religious wall paintings occupy in the body of work of the artist Chris Lebeau. The exterior of the church is relatively intact, the interior remarkably intact. The church building has ensemble value as part of a complex and as a valuable component of the belt of buildings. Because of the paintings there is furthermore a matter of rarity value.
