Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The SLAUGHTERHOUSE for diseased livestock was built around 1935 according to a design by the then municipal architect of Leerdam, Mr. Reinders. The building, designed in Cubist Expressionist style, is situated in the centre of the city. The slaughterhouse provided space for a slaughter hall, a butcher's shop, an inspection room and a laboratory. Because of its location on the embankment, the back facade has a storey that was used as a cooling chamber.
On both sides of the building a boundary fence has been placed in the form of iron fencing between piers. The slaughtering technical installation was supplied by machine factory Stork from Hengelo.
Description
Basement building consisting of a high rectangular and a lower square building section placed against each other on one building line. The facades are built in red handmoulded brick with recessed joints. The high building section housing the slaughter hall has a shed roof, the lower building volume houses the shop, the inspection room and the laboratory and is covered by a flat roof. All windows of the building have steel frames.
In the front facade (south) is on the left a round-arched entrance consisting of a double door with fittings within a running arch. Under the roof edge is on the left a flagpole fixed and on the right a lamp. In the right part of the facade are located beneath a broad wooden canopy a shop window and two steel doors with windows divided into three sections by glazing bars. Adjacent to this is a double closed door with fittings placed under a concrete lintel.
The right side facade has a canopy running around the corner under which a twelve-pane window is placed. In the slightly projecting building section adjacent to this are a three-light window and two two-light basement windows.
In the left side facade is a three-light window placed between two rainwater pipes. The back facade has various doors and windows on the storey. For the recessed part of the facade on the right a staircase has been placed which provides access to the entrance to the slaughter hall.
Interior with terrazzo floors, terrazzo counter, yellow tiles with black border, hooks, winches, barrel rollers and a concrete funnel ending in the basement for slaughter waste. The laboratory is fitted with a wooden work surface, fume cupboard and cabinet.
Valuation
The slaughterhouse is of general significance because of its cultural-historical value as a good example of the German type of slaughterhouse where from a hygienic and production-technical point of view a functional articulation in the building is recognisable.
The slaughterhouse is of general significance because of its architectural-historical value as an example of a slaughterhouse in Cubist Expressionist building style and as a rare, still existing design from the oeuvre of architect Reinders. The interior and exterior of the building is in its original state as regards main form, detailing and material use.
The slaughterhouse is of urban planning significance as part of a nearly closed facade wall.
