Omschrijving

- vanwege de gaaf bewaarde middeleeuwse gerende kavelstructuur;

- als representatief voorbeeld van een in structuur gaaf bewaarde 19de-eeuwse aanleg in Engelse landschapsstijl opgeluisterd met pittoreske bouwsels, die als 'point de vue' dienen;

- vanwege de gaaf bewaarde elementen uit de oorspronkelijke 18de-eeuwse formele aanleg zoals het lanenpatroon, een deel van het grachtenstelsel en het zeer grote Grand Canal;

Description

HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT belonging to the country estate Geerestein. Within the east-west directed lane structure, which encloses the elongated plot shape, lies the landscape-style layout which was realised after 1835 (see situational drawing from 1843). On the other side of the Geeresteinselaan runs a sight lane in an easterly direction along which a small rectangular formal garden is situated. The approach lane is formed by the Geeresteinselaan running along the house, laid out as a central axis or development basis from Woudenberg. The west side of the estate is bounded by the watercourse De Grift, which provided for drainage of surplus water from the developments. Along the Grift runs a curved lane. The formal structure of the layout, see military map from circa 1790 and the cadastral map from 1827/1830, consisted of two rectangular islands flanking the house and farm buildings, a Grand Canal towards the west and a sight lane towards the east. These elements are, except for the moat system, well preserved. Of the moat only the east moat and the moat around three sides of the northern island are still present, the banks of which have taken on a natural course. In the middle of the northern island lay a pool, this has disappeared; the pool in the formal garden has been enlarged in landscape style. The central element in the layout is formed by the Grand Canal standing at right angles to the rear facade of the house, one of the largest in the Netherlands, which offers a view of the Woudenbergsche Grift. This water avenue was probably laid out at the end of the 18th century and incorporated as a formal element in the landscape-style layout. The formal character is emphasised by the avenue planting on either side (partly no longer present). The English landscape park situated on either side of the Grand Canal is determined by an alternating structure of deciduous woodland and meadow and cultivated lands crossed by a curved lane system (see anonymous map 1843, Geerestein house collection). In the layout the straight sections of the 18th-century division have been retained. The circuit walk is marked by picturesque buildings in different styles, such as the farm building with temple front, the children's house in chalet style and the tower in neo-Gothic style. The focal point of the layout lies in the west corner of the park and is formed by the oval-shaped meadow in front of the farmhouse Griftpark which functions as a point de vue. Around the house use has been made of flowing terrain gradients and groups of trees. On either side of the approach drive to the forecourt are two natural stone vases, which now serve as rubbing stones but originally formed part of the crowning of the attic. In the 18th century the forecourt acquired a monumental appearance through the construction of the farm buildings, as its present appearance still is. The new arrangement of the forecourt with new planting elements and a new gate are not worthy of protection. To the south of the house the round meadow area has given way to a car park and a straight path has been laid out as a passage to the office Nieuw Geerestein; nevertheless the character with curved lines and the sight axis over the meadow to the children's house 'Heiligerlee' has been retained. Opposite the house on the other side of the Geeresteinselaan lies a formal garden with pool area in landscape style accessible via the aforementioned sight lane flanked by two gate piers. The lane runs with a bend through the meadows, on the north side provided with a strip of woodland, ending at the former castle Groenwoude on the Ekris.

Valuation

HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT belonging to the country estate Geerestein of general importance:

- because of the well-preserved medieval elongated plot structure;

- as a representative example of a 19th-century layout in English landscape style well-preserved in structure, embellished with picturesque buildings which serve as point de vue;

- because of the well-preserved elements from the original 18th-century formal layout such as the lane pattern, part of the moat system and the very large Grand Canal;

- because of the functional-spatial relationship with the other components of the country estate.
