Omschrijving

HOOFDGEBOUW (Geerestein).

Waardering

HOOFDGEBOUW (Geerestein) van algemeen belang:

- vanwege de ouderdom;

- vanwege de bouwgeschiedenis waarbij een U-vormig zestiende-eeuws gebouw transformeerde in een paviljoenvormig huis met 19de-eeuwse neoclassicistische elementen;

- vanwege de gaaf bewaarde 16de-eeuwse kelders;

- vanwege de kenmerkende ligging binnen de historische tuin- en parkaanleg;

Description

MAIN BUILDING (Geerestein). The apparently block-shaped main building consists of a sixteenth-century U-shaped building structure of a basement storey and two storeys, of which the courtyard was filled in around 1645 with a projecting three-axis central section. The wings are covered by a mansard roof covered with suppressed Dutch tiles and the central section by a half-hipped roof. In 1834 the house was remodeled in neoclassical style, whereby all walls were whitewashed and provided with natural stone imitation with the exception of the central risalit. With this remodeling the front facade received its current form with a cornice and a wooden attic which at the location of the central risalit is marked by a three-sided wooden pediment. Centrally in the pediment is the coat of arms of the lordship Geerestein. Two vases which in the 18th century were part of the crowning of the attic now lie as coping stones on either side of the driveway. The central risalit has on the bel-étage, accessible via a sandstone doorstep of six steps, three double semicircular doors with venetian blinds, above them a framed double balcony door flanked by six-pane windows with venetian blinds with a balcony in front resting on four consoles and provided with a simple iron balustrade. On the top storey four-pane windows with venetian blinds. On either side of the central risalit a window axis with two vertically arranged six-pane windows and one four-pane window. The asymmetrical side facades have extensions for privies (see drawing C. Pronk, 1730) and feature infill with grilled basement windows and four- and six-pane windows with venetian blinds. The four-bay wide rear facade has regular infill of basement windows, eight-pane windows with venetian blinds on the bel-étage and six-pane windows with venetian blinds on the storey, of which the middle two axes are accentuated by a balcony from 1834 resting on richly decorated consoles and provided with a simple iron balustrade. Between these middle two window axes an additional balcony door has been placed. Almost the entire house is undercellared with sixteenth-century barrel and cross-rib vaults provided with perpendicular wall ribs on piers. In the INTERIOR is notably important the seventeenth-century fireplace in the rear room with columns, which carry a wide breast decorated with a cartouche; the hall is provided with simple stucco from 1834.

Valuation

MAIN BUILDING (Geerestein) of general importance:

- because of its age;

- because of the building history whereby a U-shaped sixteenth-century building transformed into a pavilion-shaped house with nineteenth-century neoclassical elements;

- because of the well-preserved sixteenth-century cellars;

- because of the characteristic location within the historical garden and park layout;

- because of the functional-spatial relationship with the other components of the country estate.
