Omschrijving

Description

The PARSONAGE 'St Martinus' built in 1928 to the design of architect H.C.M. VAN BEERS is part of the CHURCH COMPLEX St. Martinus'. The parsonage is situated on the south side of the Roman Catholic church, on the west side of the St. Jansgildestraat. The grounds of the complex are closed off on this street side by IRONWORK. The parsonage consists of a main volume of two storeys with a single-storey intermediate section against the north gable. In the intermediate section was the storage space of the parsonage with at the rear a corridor from the sacristy to the parsonage. The former storage space is currently, in 1999, in use as a catafalque room. The corridor remains in its original state. The facades are constructed in reddish-brown brick in half-bond with sash windows.

The parsonage with square floor plan consists of two storeys and an attic closed off by a gently sloping hipped roof covered with newly improved Dutch tiles. In the front section is a roof dormer under an upturned lean-to roof. At the top of the facades of the main volume is a brick frieze. The frieze consists of six rows of brick laid in Flemish bond with in the second row from above and from below a dentil, at regular intervals. The frieze is closed off at the bottom by a projecting continuous course of stretchers. The facades end in a generous timber overhang with a gutter on corbels. At the corners, below the gutter, are rainwater collectors on each side flanked by wrought-iron scrolls. In the facades are mainly regularly distributed timber single-light sash windows with leaded-glass fanlight closed off by a roller course. The FRONT FACADE of the house is divided into three unequal bays with the entrance section in the narrow right bay. In the left and middle bays are on the first and second storey two sash windows. On the ground floor on the far right is the entrance section. Two hardstone slabs with brick mortar joint form the steps leading to the recessed timber panelled door, preceded by four brick archivolts with a stepped arch mould. The archivolts varying in width with a flat terracotta setting stone go over into the stepped arch mould. Above the entrance is a sandstone image of Saint Martinus. In the LEFT SIDE FACADE are on the ground floor two regularly distributed sash windows with centrally on the first floor one sash window. The REAR FACADE consists of three unequal bays of which the right bay is identical to the left bay in the front facade. On the ground floor of the middle bay is a double door with two coupled fanlights, flanked on each side by a narrow sash window. On the first floor are two sash windows. In the left bay are on the ground floor two leaded-glass round-arched windows closed off by a roller course with a flat terracotta setting stone. On the first floor is the staircase section behind three oblong leaded-glass windows with lower and upper lights with to the right a small two-light leaded-glass window. Centrally against the RIGHT SIDE FACADE is the intermediate section. The ridge of the intermediate section is below the brick frieze of the main volume. On the ground floor on the left and right of the intermediate section are two leaded-glass round-arched windows closed off by a roller course with a flat terracotta setting stone. On the first floor is on the left in the facade a single-light sash window. Centrally above the ridge of the attached hipped roof of the intermediate section is a horizontal four-light leaded-glass window with to the right three narrow leaded-glass windows with fanlight.

The INTERMEDIATE SECTION with rectangular floor plan consists of one storey closed off by a hipped roof covered with smothered newly improved Dutch tiles. Centrally on the ridge of the hipped roof is a later added brick, rectangular chimney shaft. Centrally in the FRONT FACADE of the intermediate section is a timber semi-circular reeded door with timber frame, a roller course with flat terracotta setting stone and a hardstone threshold. To the left of the entrance are two sash windows. To the right of the entrance are respectively a single-light sash window, a small two-light window and two outward-opening casement windows. The LEFT SIDE FACADE adjoins the main volume. The leaded-glass round-arched windows in the right side facade of the main volume are repeated in the REAR FACADE of the former storage space behind which is the procession corridor. Centrally in this rear facade is a panelled door identical to that in the front facade. In the RIGHT SIDE FACADE are on the left and right two reeded doors identical to those on the front side with centrally an outward-opening casement window. The INTERIOR is for the most part in its original state. The greatest alteration took place in the intermediate section where the storage space was repurposed. Noteworthy is the finish of the public spaces in fair-faced brickwork constructed in yellow brick. For decoration use was made in these spaces of yellow/red and green glazed brick, leaded-glass windows and a colourful tile floor characteristic of the work of architect H.C.M. van Beers. The leaded-glass round-arched windows with terracotta setting stone are closed off on the inside at the top and bottom by a red brick roller course. The storm porch is separated from the central hall by means of a semi-circular leaded-glass door with a leaded-glass frame closed off by a double roller course with red terracotta setting stone. Around the central hall on the ground floor and first floor are rooms with simple stucco ceilings.

The green painted wrought-iron IRONWORK, designed in an expressionist style, is interrupted twice for the purpose of access to the parsonage. These accesses are bounded on each side by square brick pillars with decorative brickwork.
