Inleiding
A.K. Hoekstra & Co.

Description
Introduction
The CARPENTRY WORKSHOP annex skate factory under traditional-artisanal brickwork architecture was built around 1875, almost certainly designed by and executed by the carpenter K.K. Hoekstra. The location by water was important for timber transport over water and the drainage of timber. The construction possibly involved the replacement of a wooden shed on the site; in any case, timber was reused in the construction. The layout is simple and consists of two storeys; the attic storey has a rafter roof with alternating a collar-tie and a collar-tie with tie-beam construction; the roof boarding has vertical boarding of planks that overlap and interlock ('double pan tiling'). The attic of the carpentry workshop later became the workshop for skate manufacture of the firm A.K. Hoekstra & Co.
The workshop formerly had passages to the dwelling houses at Nieuwe Hoek 4 and Leeuwarderweg 4; nowadays only to the latter property. Although the building is typologically related to warehouses, it differs from them by the large light windows and greater height of the storeys. The national monument protection focuses on parts of the exterior, namely the original north facade, the east facade and the south facade. The additions to the north facade fall outside national monument protection. The western part of the south facade has been altered through change of use of the rooms behind; this part of the facade (with window and door) is of subordinate importance for the protection. Some windows have received different glazing bar patterns during restoration work.
Description
The property with a rectangular floor plan consists of two storeys under a gabled roof with hipped end. The facades are built in brown brickwork (stretcher bond and daywork stripe) and are enlivened with yellow pressed brick. The southern roof slope is laid with red and black glazed Dutch tiles in vertical stripes; the northern and western roof slopes are laid with unglazed red Dutch tiles. On the ridge two brickwork chimneys. The east facade is symmetrically laid out with in the centre a vertical axis of three hoisting doors placed one above the other, each under a rooster comb. The decorative frame with pulley and some ornamentation conceal the hoist beam. On both sides of the folding door on the first storey two arched fifteen-pane windows under a rooster comb; on the first floor on both sides of the folding door two arched twelve-pane windows under a rooster comb; in the gable apex on both sides of the folding door a semicircular, iron window under roll moulding. On the east facade some cast-iron rose anchors.
In the long south facade six arched twenty-pane windows and a door opening; on the floor above, ten, mostly twelve-pane windows. In the western facade a door and two six-pane windows under an intermediate stretcher course with yellow setting and bead brickwork.
