Inleiding

Introduction

The DWELLING HOUSE in Eclectic style was built in 1888, almost certainly to a design by A.K. Hoekstra, as a business residence of the family's own contracting business and skate-making workshop. This type of dwelling is sometimes called a manse or private income dwelling. The inscription on the marble foundation stone reads: 'At this building the first / stone laid by / Keimpe A. Hoekstra / aged 80 and / Keimpe A. Hoekstra / aged 11 years, / Warga the 26th June 1888'. The dwelling house belonged to the adjacent carpentry business and the skate factory of the firm A.K. Hoekstra, which flourished at about this time. Initially it stood separate from the workshop, as is still visible from the clean brickwork in the carpentry workshop.

The dwelling house has been gradually altered since 1989 whereby original components have been removed (iron entrance gate) or reduced (glazing bars). State protection is therefore directed mainly at the front and side facades and on certain aspects of the interior. The layout of the INTERIOR of the dwelling house has been altered, but the original structure is reasonably recognisable; the furnishings are of minor importance for the purposes of protection.

Description

The dwelling house has an almost square plan and consists of one storey with a truncated hipped roof; at the corners two chimneys and on the roof slopes black glazed corrugated Frisian tiles. The facades are constructed in brown brick in English bond with a cut joint. The facade is vertically articulated by a plastered plinth, a string course at the level of the window sill and a wooden cornice. The facade is horizontally articulated by corner pilasters and a central risalit, which continues into a brick dormer window under a gently pitched gabled roof with the overhang resting on consoles. The wall piers at the corner of the dwelling house and of the central risalit have plastered panel strips with decorative ornament; the corner pilasters have a plastered capital.

The window openings on the south and east facades are distributed at regular intervals across the facade and all have a moulded eyebrow arch with a hood. In the south facade from left to right: a provision cellar window with theft bars, an H-shaped window, a blind window with eyebrow arch and an H-shaped window. In the roof slope above the blind window is an oeil-de-boeuf covered with zinc. The east facade is symmetrically arranged and consists of a projecting central porch, built through to the dormer with T-shaped window and balcony; on both sides of the porch two H-shaped windows. In the central risalit an internal porch with plastered side walls; in the right-hand wall the marble foundation stone. The steps are rendered with Portland cement; the landing has marble tiles. The porte brisée has panel doors. The wooden balcony above the entrance rests on consoles; the balustrade has wrought-iron railwork between wooden posts. In the north facade two windows with eyebrow arch and hood.

The INTERIOR of the dwelling house contains among other things the following valuable elements: the hallway and parts of the left front room. The hallway has a wooden floor, an imitation-marble wainscot and a stucco ceiling with border decoration. The right front room has a black marble fireplace mantel with beam and fluted columns, a stucco ceiling with border decorations and central ornament.

Valuation

The dwelling house in Eclectic style from 1888, which was almost certainly built to a design by A.K. Hoekstra as a business residence of the family's own contracting business and skate-making workshop, is of general cultural-historical importance:

- because of the commemorative value of the flourishing period of the important skate industry at Wergea,

- because of the reasonable degree of aesthetic quality of the design,

- because of the reasonable degree of integrity of the south, east and north facades,

- because of the functional relationship with the industrial-craft complex, of which the building formed part as an entrepreneur's residence.
