Omschrijving

Description

The grounds at Duinlust consist of two parts. The high dune area, "the upper site", on the north-west side which until development in the 1880s was in use as a sand extraction site. For this activity the Zanderijvaart was dug. The highest dune here was referred to as "de Berg". The south-eastern part, the "lower site" is low-lying and here are situated the ornamental and utility grounds. The layout at the first house Duinlust from the period 1814-1820 was modest in conception. At the house there was, besides a small ornamental section, also utility grounds with potato and arable land. The ornamental layout was undoubtedly also realised in landscape style from the outset, but much of this has not been retained. What does remain is the orangery from this period. The stables to the south of the drive were initially retained. In 1939 these were demolished and around 1960 the elm avenue that led to the stables was entirely grubbed up. Just before the new house Duinlust was built, the railway line Haarlem-Zandvoort was laid across the grounds on the west side. At the new house from 1882 a garden layout was realised by E.C.A. Petzold. The low part was laid out in a spacious, picturesque landscape style. Noteworthy is that a water feature is absent from this. From the entrance area on the Duinlustweg a curved avenue leads to the main entrance, in front of which lies a circular lawn with surrounding avenue. The layout on either side of the avenue has almost entirely disappeared. Further to the south-east and south-west of the house a layout of irregularly shaped lawns edged by picturesque groups of trees. Originally there were two sight lines. The south-western one, directed at Kraantje Lek has become overgrown. The south-eastern axis still exists and offers a far view towards Elswout, which like Duinlust was in the possession of the Van der Vliet-Borski family. This axis is associated with the so-called clover piece at Elswout. The originally laid out flower beds and rose garden have disappeared. The vegetable garden with floristry, orchard and greenhouses was situated on the far side of the Duinlustweg, then still called Dodeweg. These gardens were entirely walled. The wall has since disappeared, but the open space as such is still clearly recognisable. The outbuildings that are now here fall outside the protection. In the garden "utility installations" were laid out such as the ice cellar, the water basin that supplied the hydraulic lift system in the house with the necessary pressure and later the electricity house. A second foundation of a pavilion or bandstand is to be found just to the south of the football pitch. Originally there were three pavilions on the grounds. In 1912 just beyond the porter's lodge another garage and chauffeur's dwelling were built. In contrast to the more cultivated part around the house the underlying dune area was kept "wild". The sandy soil was planted with a large number of pines. A structure of walking paths was laid out within this. After the Second World War the State became tenant of Duinlust and subsequently the Central Institute for the Training of Sports Leaders (CIOS) was established there. For this function a 400m track and a football pitch were laid out in the garden. Two new buildings were erected, one directly to the north-west of the main building and a second on the former pheasant meadow to the east of the main building. These buildings fall outside the protection. In 1999 the house with the land in the immediate surroundings was sold to a project developer. The Cios will vacate the property. The future use is still unknown.

Valuation

The historical park and garden layout is of general importance from a cultural-historical point of view and the history of garden architecture and furthermore

- because of its place in the oeuvre of E.C.A. Petzold

- because of the important visual relationship to the adjacent Elswout.
