Omschrijving

Description

A FOLLY dating from the third quarter of the eighteenth century, which was enlarged in 1833-34 to a sham chapel, located at the extreme southern edge of the park. The folly has a square ground plan and comprises two storeys under a gabled roof covered with Dutch tiles. On the roof ridge is a bell-cote with wooden bell placed. The folly was restored in 1996, during which the wooden veranda structure on the south side was not reinstated.

The front or north facade has an entrance door placed on the central axis, set in a profiled ogee arch. The ogee arch is accentuated by a rendered band with in the apex of the arch a keystone. On either side of the entrance is a round-arched niche. On the corners of this facade is a buttress constructed with a setback. Above the entrance is a round sham window. Parallel to the sloping sides of the roof is a band of rendered basketweave pattern applied. The rear facade has a modern double door placed in the middle with round-arched fanlight. Building traces of the wooden veranda extension are visible in the facade. For the pigeons, narrow plank roosts are placed one above the other on consoles in the gable top from which the pigeon holes open out. The right side facade has a high-placed ogee-arched window with central mullion. The window is closed with a wooden shutter. The left side facade is blind.

In the folly are traces of a 'hood' and a console present.

Valuation

The folly of the country estate Sandwijck is of general importance because of the cultural-historical value as a well-preserved and rare example of a folly that was constructed as a dove-cote and tea house. As well as because of the architectural-historical value as an example of a folly with neogothic style influences. Also because of the ensemble value as an important functional component in the park and in relation to the other complex components.
