LANDHUIS van de buitenplaats Sandwijck, gelegen langs de Biltse Grift in het noordelijk deel van het park. Het huis is via een oprijlaan, die langs de noordgevel loopt, te bereiken. De grondvorm van het huis is nagenoeg vierkant, het bouwvolume bestaat uit twee bouwlagen en wordt gedekt door een met Hollandse pannen gedekt afgeplat schilddak (waarin in twee van de vier dakschilden vijf moderne dakramen zijn geplaatst) met vier schoorstenen op de hoeken. De gevels zijn in baksteen opgetrokken en hebben een omlopende hardstenen plint en een afsluitende houten kroonlijst met triglieven en consoles die de bakgoot ondersteunen. De gevels zijn geleed door middel van bepleisterde (hoek)lisenen met casementen. De vensters zijn voorzien van vier- en zesruits schuiframen, waaronder een verdiept liggend, bepleisterd gevelveld met rankwerk versiering.
De voor- of noordgevel telt vijf vensterassen. In de middelste as met een lichte voorsprong bevindt zich de terugliggende ingang met pijlers onder een balkon. Deze middenas wordt bekroond door een fronton boven de kroonlijst. De timpaan is versierd met een medaillon en rankwerk. In de eerste bouwlaag bevindt zich een dubbele balkondeur met bovenlicht. De achtergevel is eveneens vijf vensterassen breed en bezit geen bijzondere, afwijkende details.
De rechter zijgevel heeft een bijna symmetrische indeling van vijf vensterassen. Voor de drie middelste assen is een grote serre onder plat dak gezet. De serre heeft in het midden een uitbouw met afgeronde hoeken. De linker zijgevel heeft een asymmetrisch indeling van vijf vensterassen. Geheel links is om de gemetselde, rechthoekige erker een rijk gedetailleerde gietijzeren constructie met een luifel-opbouw in de tweede bouwlaag geplaatst ten behoeve van het balkon op het plat van de erker. Geheel rechts bevindt zich een eveneens rijk versierde driezijdige, gietijzeren veranda onder plat dak. Beide constructies stammen uit de tweede helft van de negentiende eeuw.
De tweede as van rechts heeft een lichte voorsprong, waarvoor een houten portiek is gezet die aan drie zijden met een rondboog is opengewerkt. In de portiek bevindt zich de hoofdingang van het huis.
Het interieur is vanwege het sterk gewijzigde karakter van ondergeschikt belang.
Waardering
Het landhuis Sandwijck is van algemeen belang vanwege de cultuurhistorische waarde vanwege de ontstaansgeschiedenis, alsmede van architectuurhistorische waarde vanwege de bouwgeschiedenis en als voorbeeld van een landhuis met neoclassicistische stijlinvloeden. Description
COUNTRY HOUSE of the country estate Sandwijck, located along the Biltse Grift in the northern part of the park. The house is accessible via a drive that runs along the north facade. The ground plan of the house is nearly square, the building volume consists of two storeys and is covered by a hipped roof covered with Dutch tiles (in which five modern roof lights are placed in two of the four roof skirts) with four chimneys on the corners. The facades are built in brick and have a continuous sandstone plinth and a terminating wooden cornice with triglyphs and consoles that support the gutter. The facades are articulated by means of rendered (corner) pilasters with casements. The windows are provided with four- and six-pane sash windows, below which a recessed horizontal rendered facade field with scrollwork decoration.
The front or north facade has five window bays. In the central bay with a slight projection is the recessed entrance with pillars under a balcony. This central bay is crowned by a pediment above the cornice. The tympanum is decorated with a medallion and scrollwork. In the first storey is a double balcony door with fanlight. The rear facade is likewise five window bays wide and has no special, deviating details.
The right side facade has an almost symmetrical arrangement of five window bays. In front of the three central bays is a large conservatory under a flat roof. The conservatory has in the middle an outbuilding with rounded corners. The left side facade has an asymmetrical arrangement of five window bays. At the far left, around the masonry, rectangular oriel is a richly detailed cast-iron construction with a canopy structure in the second storey placed for the benefit of the balcony on the roof of the oriel. At the far right is likewise a richly decorated three-sided cast-iron veranda under a flat roof. Both constructions date from the second half of the nineteenth century.
The second bay from the right has a slight projection, in front of which a wooden portico is placed that is opened on three sides with a round arch. In the portico is the main entrance of the house.
The interior is of subordinate importance because of the strongly altered character.
Valuation
The country house Sandwijck is of general importance because of the cultural-historical value because of the origin history, as well as of architectural-historical value because of the building history and as an example of a country house with neoclassical style influences. Also of particular importance because of the remarkable and richly detailed cast-iron veranda and canopy from the end of the nineteenth century. As well as because of the ensemble value as a component of the country estate in relation to the other complex components.
