Inleiding

Waardering

Introduction

Large detached former VILLA, situated on the northern side of the Deventerstraat. The building was constructed in 1909 on commission of J.J. von Zeppelin by the well-known Apeldoorn architect A. van Driesum, who designed the building in a traditional building style related to the Um 1800. The house is no longer in use as a residence and was converted to office use in 1948. The layout has been altered over time, with the exception of the attic. On the right side gable there is still a large stained-glass window in the place of the original bathroom. The garden of the building was originally larger and extended in a westerly direction. The original garden layout has disappeared and a brick garden wall separates the current garden from the Deventerstraat.

Description

The building, constructed in cross-bonded brickwork, is built on a rectangular ground plan and has a projecting, flattened hipped roof with inverted roof tiles. The roof is covered with dulled tuiles du Nord tiles and the moulded gutter rests on wooden blocks. On the front roof slope and on the rear roof slope there are roof dormers with an inverted roof and two windows each with a 7-pane fanlight. The building has two storeys. Around the building runs a brick plinth which is finished with a natural stone drip moulding. Of the four corner chimneys, three have disappeared. The gables end at the top with an architrave moulding and a brick frieze. Most windows have at the top a closure consisting of a lintel beam with a moulded profile and one-and-a-half brick course with plastered birth and closing stones.

The FRONT FACADE has an almost symmetrical layout. The ground floor has in the centre a segmental bay with a broad transom window and two side windows. Behind this was the living room. Above the transom window is a 24-pane fanlight; the side windows each have a 16-pane fanlight. On each side of the bay there is a narrow sash window with a 16-pane fanlight and two coupled sash windows each with a 16-pane fanlight.

The first floor has above the bay three coupled sash windows, of which the middle one is wider than the other two. The middle window has a 24-pane fanlight, the two flanking windows each have a 12-pane fanlight. On either side of this frame is a black cartouche on a white plastered and tilted square field. On the left is the word "anno", on the right the date "1909" on a rectangular field within this cartouche. On the left in the gable is a large loggia, on the right a coupled window as on the ground floor. The loggia has on the front a brick balustrade and a brick column at the corner. Above the wall opening is a decorated lintel beam.

On the LEFT SIDE GABLE, the original garden facade, the cut-in lintel beam is supported by two finely shaped wooden small columns with capitals and cut-in motifs. On this side too there is a brick balustrade with a wooden deck beam. On the balcony there is a door with a 20-pane fanlight and a double door with a 36-pane fanlight. To the left of the balcony are on the ground floor and on the first floor a sash window (single-pane upper window on ground floor, 24-pane on the first floor). Below the balcony is a double garden door with a 36-pane fanlight. The two side windows each have a 20-pane fanlight. The REAR GABLE has an asymmetrical layout. On the left is the original flat-roofed scullery with in it a rear door and barred side windows with lintel beams and roller shutters. Above the extension there is a door opening with a 4-pane fanlight with to the right of it two frames positioned one above the other, each with two coupled sash windows. These windows light the current stairwell and presumably formerly had a stained-glass filling. To the right of the extension are two former garden door openings different in width, with respectively a 24-pane and a 36-pane fanlight. The woodwork of it is still original. Above the left door is on the first floor still a transom window with a 24-pane fanlight.

The RIGHT SIDE GABLE contains on either side of the entrance a window with a 24-pane fanlight. The entrance door is situated under a wooden canopy on carved wooden brackets and has a 3-pane fanlight. To the right of the entrance are two basement windows each with a 6-pane basement window. Above the entrance the first floor has a window filled with stained glass.

The INTERIOR contains still two corner stoves.

Valuation

VILLA in Um 1800 style, designed by A. van Driesum, in 1909.

- The building Deventerstraat 37 is of architectural-historical value as a well and - particularly as regards the exterior - reasonably well-preserved example of a villa whose building style refers to the Um 1800 Style based on traditional architecture. The building stands out for high-quality aesthetic qualities, such as the advanced use of materials and the sober but carefully designed detailing. Characteristic are among other things the design of the roof and the window detailing. The design is significant in the oeuvre of the Apeldoorn architect A. van Driesum, who designed multiple objects in this area. There is an ensemble value with the neighbouring villa Deventerstraat 39. Both villas are situated at the edge of the villa district de Parken.

- Of urban-planning value through its situation on the Deventerstraat, near the corner with the Generaal van Heutzlaan. The building forms here, especially in combination with the neighbouring building Deventerstraat 39, a striking characteristic element at the entrance of the centre of Apeldoorn.

- Of cultural-historical value as a recognisable element from a social development. The building was constructed as housing for the new and capital-rich urban elite, who preferred to settle in substantial villas in spaciously laid out park-like villa districts. De Parken is one of the largest and oldest villa districts of this type in our country and the development contributed to the greatly changed appearance of the town and the social stratification of its population.
