Inleiding

Introduction

Designed in 1907 by Amsterdam architects E.M. Rood and F.W.M. Poggenbeek, BUILDING B is situated at the north-east corner of the complex now known as 'GROOT SCHUYLENBURG', but during the Second World War and before was known as 'HET APELDOORNSCHE BOSCH'. The building was originally used as a kitchen and residential building for staff. Today it is also sometimes called 'de schuilhut'. The building now has no function. It was built together with the other protected pavilions and the former director's residence on the north side of the complex, parallel to Zutphensestraat. This pavilion is one of the most richly detailed buildings from the original building period. In the architecture, whitewashed facades, such as those used in the half-timbered style and Chalet style common at the time, are combined with elements borrowed from various other architectural styles such as segmental arches and specklayers. The flat roof coverings used could contain a reference to traditional Jewish architecture.

Description

The detached pavilion has a composite ground plan and is originally symmetrically composed of various rectangular building blocks set back in height and depth. The whole is constructed around a tall rectangular core, the ground floor of which consists of a high hall. Against its south facade are two low portal projections. Against the side facades of the core building are two lower rectangular side wings which, on the side of Zutphensestraat, transition into narrow building sections containing corridors. Between both narrow building sections, on the north side is a single-storey section adjoining the core building with a large roof terrace. Against the outer facades of the narrow building sections are further lower rectangular building sections which project slightly compared to the narrow building sections. The eastern located building section has a younger L-shaped extension. All roofs of the various building sections are flat and fitted with an open-work balustrade executed in unplastered brick. This balustrade is presumed to have been present on several of the original pavilions. The balustrades have plastered corner posts and above and below a profile moulding in red facing brick. The various building sections have a brick plinth which is finished with a drip moulding executed in red facing brick with a bevelled profile. All facades are plastered and have horizontal decorative bands executed in facing brick. Above the windows and door openings are segmental arches executed partly in brick and partly in facing brick. The SOUTH FACADE facing the grounds of the institution has two portal projections of one storey. The south facades of these each have a round window with a cross-shaped glazing pattern. In the eastern side facades are broad door openings under a segmental arch and double doors. The rectangular core building has four very tall windows in the south facade with unprofilied frames, two fixed panes, 9-pane lower windows and two (placed one above the other) 3-pane fanlights. Above each of the portal projections is a 3-pane window under a segmental arch. The storey of the main block contains four windows each with a 6-pane casement window and a 3-pane fanlight. The side wings, lower and adjoining the main block, have on the ground floor next to the portal projection a window with a segmental arch and an 8-pane sash window and on the storey a double balcony door with a 3-pane fanlight and a 4-pane casement window with a 3-pane fanlight. The remaining segmental arch windows of these side wings (the east and west facade each four window openings wide) contain 4-pane casement windows with 3-pane fanlights. The narrow building sections on the NORTH FACADE have small segmental arch windows with single-pane frames. The recessed middle section adjoining the main block between both narrow building sections has one storey and a symmetrical facade arrangement. In the middle are two door openings with, to left and right of them, two windows with 9-pane windows and 3-pane fanlights. From the main block onto the large roof terrace lead double garden doors with 3-pane windows and 3-pane fanlights. The large 16-pane iron window in the western extension is not original. To its right is an arched clamped door.

Valuation

PAVILION from 1907, situated on the grounds of GROOT SCHUYLENBURG.

- Of architectural historical value as a good and, for its time of creation (1907), a typical example of a pavilion on the grounds of Groot Schuylenburg. This institution was originally known as the psychiatric establishment Het Apeldoornsche Bosch. The construction of this type of detached pavilion is typical of the early twentieth century. Its functional layout was usually combined with an interpretation of architectural styles common at the time. This building has been well preserved in main form and detailing and, through its striking architecture with whitewashed facades, balustrade and accents in red facing brick, has an important character defining the streetscape. The four pavilions to be protected are recognizable by this architecture and thus form an important ensemble.

- Of urban planning value as an important component of a group of four buildings still substantially in their original form, situated on Zutphensestraat. The four functionally different buildings are located in a park-like setting in the northern part of the complex. They are aligned end to end and thus form the southern boundary of this section of Zutphensestraat.

- Of cultural historical value as an original part of the former Jewish institution for mental patients Het Apeldoornsche Bosch. Before the Second World War, this institution was one of the largest and most renowned establishments in this field. During the Second World War, large-scale deportation of Jewish patients and nursing staff took place from this institution. As a result, the entire complex also has important memorial value for the period of the Second World War and the resulting horrors of the Holocaust.
