Inleiding
Het GYMNASIUM is gelegen aan de Kastanjelaan op de hoek met de Alexanderlaan en ligt precies in de as van de weg. Het pand is in 1913 gebouwd naar een ontwerp uit 1912 van de Apeldoornse gemeente-architect Gerrit de Zeeuw (1861-1938) in de Nieuw-Historiserende stijl met invloeden van de Um-1800 stijl en versoberd Classicisme. Naast het gebouw bevindt zich een voormalige conciërgewoning en achter het gebouw een later gebouwde gymnastiekzaal.
Omschrijving
Het in kruisverband gemetselde, bakstenen pand is opgetrokken op een vierkante plattegrond in de vorm van een centraalbouw. Het telt twee bouwlagen onder een omlopend afgeplat schilddak met leien in maasdekking. Alle gevels hebben een forse middenrisaliet, waardoor het pand bijna kruisvormig overkomt. Gevels en risalieten hebben hardstenen hoekblokken ter plaatse van de plint. De gevels hebben een hardstenen waterlijst die onder de vensters van de begane grond naar boven rechthoekig is omgezet. De gevels worden afgesloten door een zandstenen architraaf, bakstenen fries en geprofileerde houten gootlijst op houten klossen, waarachter een bakgoot. De vensters worden ontlast door een steens segmentboog met zandstenen aanzet- en sluitstenen en hebben zandstenen kroonlijstjes en kalven. De vensters hebben, tenzij anders vermeld, onder het kalf een 16-ruits stolpraam en boven het kalf een 16-ruits schuifraam en bezitten aan de bovenzijde een 4-ruits beschermer. De lokalen zijn op beide verdiepingen gegroepeerd rondom een grote centrale hal met ter plaatse van het risaliet in de linker zijgevel het trappenhuis. De symmetrisch ingedeelde VOORGEVEL bezit in de middenas van het risaliet de hoofdingang met een in een portiek vervatte dubbele paneeldeur met 9-ruits oeil de boeufs en twee 16-ruits bovenlichten. De portiek is bereikbaar via een hardstenen trap en is gevat in een omlijsting met zandstenen fronton op vlakke pilasters met spekbanden. Het fronton bezit een cartouche met wapenschild en guirlandes. De portiek wordt aan beide zijden geflankeerd door een venster met onder een 12-ruits en boven een 6-ruits raam. Boven het kroonlijstje een oeil de boeuf met gebeeldhouwde omlijsting. De verdieping heeft drie vensters, waarvan het middelste onder het kalf een 16-ruits draairaam heeft. Het risaliet wordt afgesloten met een fronton met een oeil de boeuf met rijk gebeeldhouwde omlijsting. Het fries heeft hier een cartouche met in verguld opschrift het woord gymnasium. Het schilddak van het risaliet wordt bekroond met een klokkentorentje, bestaande uit een vierkante onderbouw met wijzerplaten en een rechthoekig open klokkenstoel met rondboogopeningen en een gebogen zinken schilddak met hoekpinakels en een smeedijzeren windvaan.
Links en rechts van het risaliet bevat de gevel zowel op de begane grond als de verdieping twee vensters. De gevel bezit verder sierankers ter hoogte van de verdiepingsvloer en in zandsteen gevatte luchtroosters. Het dakschild heeft twee dakkapellen met leien schilddaken en luiken met 3-ruits raampje.
De op hoofdlijnen symmetrisch ingedeelde LINKER ZIJGEVEL bezit in de middenas van het risaliet de zij-ingang met een in een portiek vervatte dubbele paneeldeur met 9-ruits oeil de boeufs. De portiek is bereikbaar via een hardstenen trap en is gevat in een omlijsting met zandstenen hoofdgestel op vlakke pilasters met spekbanden. De portiek wordt aan beide zijden geflankeerd door een kelderlicht in de plint en een venster met onder en boven een 6-ruits raam. De eerste verdieping heeft drie vensters zonder beschermer en de tweede verdieping heeft in de hier hoger opgaande risaliet eveneens drie vensters met onder 12-ruits vensters met verzwaarde middenstijl in plaats van stolpramen en boven 12-ruits ramen. Links van het risaliet bezit de gevel op beide verdiepingen drie vensters en rechts twee. De gevel bezit verder in zandsteen gevatte luchtroosters en links van het risaliet een buitentoegang tot de kelder. Het dakschild heeft drie dakkapellen met leien schilddaken en luiken met 3-ruits raampje.
De symmetrisch ingedeelde ACHTERGEVEL bevat in het risaliet op de begane grond zes vensters met 9-ruits ramen boven en onder en op de verdieping zes vensters met 12-ruits ramen onder en boven. Links en rechts van het risaliet is de gevel vrijwel blind. De gevel bezit verder sierankers ter hoogte van de verdiepingsvloer en in zandsteen gevatte luchtroosters. Het dakschild heeft drie dakkapellen met leien schilddaken en luiken met 3-ruits raampje. Tegen de gevel staat een galerij met bakstenen plint met natuurstenen dekplaten en hoekblokken, houten Toscaanse zuiltjes en een geprofileerd hoofdgestel. De op hoofdlijnen symmetrisch ingedeelde RECHTER ZIJGEVEL bevat in het risaliet op de begane grond drie en op de verdieping twee vensters. Links daarvan op beide verdiepingen twee en rechts drie vensters. De gevel bezit verder in zandsteen gevatte luchtroosters. Het dakschild heeft drie dakkapellen met leien schilddaken en luiken met 3-ruits raampje.
In het INTERIEUR bevinden zich nog meerdere oorspronkelijke onderdelen, waaronder vloeren en een monumentale trap, uitgevoerd in rood terrazzo. Enkele lokalen bezitten nog (delen van) de oorspronkelijke betimmering, lambrisering en kastenwanden. Verder bevat het pand geprofileerde deurkozijnen. De zolder bevat een klokkenstoel.

The GYMNASIUM is located on the Kastanjelaan at the corner with the Alexanderlaan and lies precisely in the axis of the road. The facades have an ashlar drip moulding which is rectangularly turned upwards below the windows of the ground floor. The facades are finished with a sandstone architrave, brick frieze and profiled wooden cornice on wooden corbels, behind which a brick gutter. The windows are relieved by a brick segmental arch with sandstone springing and closing stones and have sandstone cornices and drip stones. The windows have, unless otherwise stated, below the drip stone a 16-pane casement window and above the drip stone a 16-pane sash window and possess at the top a 4-pane protective light. The rooms are arranged on both storeys around a large central hall with, at the location of the projection in the left side facade, the staircase. The symmetrically arranged FRONT FACADE has in the central axis of the projection the main entrance with a double panelled door set in a portico with 9-pane oeil de boeuf and two 16-pane fanlights. The portico is accessed via an ashlar staircase and is framed with a sandstone pediment on flat pilasters with voussoirs. The pediment features a cartouche with coat of arms and garlands. The portico is flanked on both sides by a window with below a 12-pane and above a 6-pane window. Above the cornice an oeil de boeuf with sculpted moulding. The first storey has three windows, of which the middle one below the drip stone has a 16-pane casement window. The projection is crowned with a pediment with an oeil de boeuf with richly sculpted moulding. The frieze features here a cartouche with in gilded inscription the word gymnasium. The hipped roof of the projection is crowned with a belfry, consisting of a square base with clock faces and a rectangular open bell frame with round arch openings and a curved zinc hipped roof with corner pinnacles and a wrought iron weathervane.
Left and right of the projection the facade contains on both the ground floor and the first storey two windows. The facade further has ornamental wall anchors at the height of the floor level and air vents set in sandstone. The roof slope has two roof dormers with slate hipped roofs and shutters with 3-pane window.
The LEFT SIDE FACADE, arranged on main lines symmetrically, has in the central axis of the projection the side entrance with a double panelled door set in a portico with 9-pane oeil de boeuf. The RIGHT SIDE FACADE, arranged on main lines symmetrically, contains in the projection on the ground floor three and on the first storey two windows. In the INTERIOR there are several original components, including floors and a monumental staircase, executed in red terrazzo. Some rooms still have (parts of) the original timber work, panelling and cupboard walls. The building further contains profiled door frames. The attic contains a bell frame.
