Introduction

HOSPITAL ('Amaliastichting'), built in 1873 on commission of the Red Cross for the care of wounded soldiers, and executed in neo-Gothic style with Tudor elements.

The building is laid out on a composite plan in which a nearly square ground plan for the main building, which is connected by means of a linking section, with rectangular buildings on either side.

The gates are of a later date and are excluded from national protection together with the added extensions on the ground floor.

Description

The front facade of the hospital is symmetrical in design, with main building and ancillary buildings. Main building constructed in brickwork with, facing the street and running parallel, three storeys, building section with single-storey rear building. The main building has at the location of the central risalit a gabled roof situated between end facades, on which a gabled roof adjoins running parallel to the street, which is terminated at the side facades by a spout gable. The front facade consists of five bays, of which the central one is risaliting. Both the central risalit as well as the four corners of the main building are flanked by continuous, projecting plastered columns fitted with casements. The central risalit contains above the main entrance executed in stone a flight of steps, moreover a balcony, a window with accolade arch in the third storey and a plastered tondo and a painted red cross. The main entrance further contains a profiled round-arch surround and neo-Gothic detailed fanlight. The natural stone double bands run, interrupted by the aforementioned corner columns, over the side facades which, apart from three rectangular windows (two of which blind) and a window divided by glazing bars under herringbone arch, are executed as blind in the third storey. Parallel to the roof line and beneath the cornice of the front facade ornamental brickwork is applied, which also occurs above the natural stone plinth on the ground floor. Almost all windows are 3x(1+3) ruite sash windows with neo-Gothic detailed fanlights. Only in the third storey do deviating types occur such as four coupled sash windows and the previously discussed window types in the left and right side facade. In the interior the original layout with hall and flight of steps with balusters remains in the main building, continuing to the attic storey. In the basement the caretaker's dwelling is present with kitchen flue and cupboards. Several stucco ceilings are present; among others on the first floor in the balcony room a stucco ceiling with coats of arms. The room to the right of this has the original cupboard wall on either side of the flue. Furthermore the original doors and door frames are present throughout.

The ancillary buildings connected on either side via a - later - gate with the main building are likewise constructed in brickwork and have one storey under a tiled gabled roof between end facades with identical detailing in corner columns, roof line and ornamental brickwork as mentioned in the main building. Both front facades have a door and two windows. The side facades have two blocked-up windows and a 2x(1+2) ruite window under a window closed off by a herringbone arch in the gable top.
