Inleiding
Als laboratorium gebouwd UNIVERSITEITSGEBOUW voor het Rudolph Magnus Instituut in opdracht van de Rijksuniversiteit Utrecht. In 1925 gebouwd in de trant van de Nieuwe Zakelijkheid met Amsterdamse Schoolelementen naar ontwerp van architect A.A. Kok en gelegen op het voormalige unversiteitscomplex aan de Vondellaan.
Omschrijving
In baksteen met kunststenen detaillering opgetrokken pand op L-vormige plattegrond. Gebouw met souterrain en drie bouwlagen, een deel twee hoge bouwlagen, achterbouw met één bouwlaag, beide onder plat dak.
De voorgevel wordt bepaald door over de volle breedte van de gevel geplaatste lintvensters met stalen ramen in iedere bouwlaag. Alle vensters uitgevoerd met doorlopende kunststenen onder- en bovendorpels en een sculpturale beëindiging. De voorgevel met vooruitspringend middendeel van drie bouwlagen, linker bouwdeel met twee bouwlagen over eenzelfde bouwhoogte. De overgang tussen het linker- en rechterbouwdeel is rondgemetseld uitgevoerd. Het rechterbouwdeel wordt geaccentueerd door een terugliggende in torenvorm gebouwd trappenhuis, waarvan de hoek rechtsvoor verhoogd is tot pyloon. Hier is eveneens de ingang gesitueerd in de vorm van een uitgebouwde portiek met plat dak. Aan westzijde boven de ingang gesitueerde steen met opschrift: "Pharmacologisch Laboratorium 1927" aan weerszijden de 'sol iustitia' en de aardbol. Tevens aan weerszijden twee figuratieve voorstellingen. Decoratieve bakstenen dakrand ter beëindiging van de gevel.
Achtergevel in gelijksoortige vormgeving als de voorgevel.
Interieur met lange gangen met aan weerszijden de lokalen. Op de begane grond een collegezaal met betonnen insteek en houten collegebanken. De collegezaal is via een deur in de achterwand verbonden met een fraai trappenhuis met decoratieve trapleuningen. Centraal trappenhuis eveneens met fraai vormgegeven trap. De gangen grotendeels met oorspronkelijke deuren naar de diverse vertrekken. Alle vloeren van granito met parelmoer.
Waardering
UNIVERSITEITSGEBOUW voor het Rudolph Magnus Instituut van algemeen belang vanwege de architectuurhistorische waarde als markant voorbeeld van een versoberde vorm van Expressionisme die als bouwstijl van de Nieuwe Haagse School, elementen uit Nieuwe Bouwen combineert met invloeden van de Amsterdamse School. Van cultuurhistorische waarde vanwege de bestemming welke is verbonden met de geschiedenis van het hoger onderwijs.

Built in 1925 in the style of the Nieuwe Zakelijkheid with Amsterdam School elements to the design of architect A.A. Kok and situated on the former university complex at the Vondellaan.
Description
Building constructed in brickwork with artificial stone detailing on L-shaped ground plan. Building with basement and three storeys, one section with two high storeys, rear building with one storey, both under flat roof.
The front facade is determined by band windows placed across the full width of the facade with steel frames in each storey. All windows executed with continuous artificial stone lower and upper sills and sculptural termination. The front facade with projecting central section of three storeys, left building section with two storeys over the same building height. The transition between the left and right building section is executed in rounded brickwork. The right building section is accentuated by a recessed tower-form stairwell, the corner of which front right is raised to a pylon. Here the entrance is also situated in the form of an extended vestibule with flat roof. On the west side above the entrance a stone with inscription: "Pharmacologisch Laboratorium 1927" on either side the 'sol iustitia' and the globe. Also on either side two figurative representations. Decorative brick roof edge to terminate the facade.

Interior with long corridors with rooms on either side. On the ground floor a lecture hall with concrete inlay and wooden lecture benches. UNIVERSITY BUILDING for the Rudolph Magnus Institute of general importance by virtue of its architectural-historical value as a striking example of a restrained form of Expressionism which as a building style of the Nieuwe Haagse School combines elements of Nieuwe Bouwen with influences from the Amsterdam School. Of cultural-historical value by virtue of the designation which is connected with the history of higher education.
