Inleiding
In 1892 gebouwd Nederlands GASTHUIS Voor Oogleiders, gesticht door F. C. Donders en ontworpen door architect D. Kruyf in neo-renaissancestijl. Het gasthuis bestaat uit een hoofdgebouw aan de F.C. Dondersstraat en een vleugel aan de Bleyenburgstraat, beide daterend uit 1892-94. Vervolgens een uitbreiding aan het hoofdgebouw aan de noordzijde uit 1938-39 in stijl van het Nieuwe Bouwen. Voorts van bescherming uitgesloten uitbreidingen op de hoek Evertsenstraat/ Bleyenburgstraat uit 1950 en op het binnenterrein uit 1967.
N.B. De vleugel aan de Cornelis Evertsenstraat uit 1902 in Neo-renaissancestijl is recentelijk gesloopt en vervangen door nieuwbouw.
Omschrijving
Hoofdgebouw met drie bouwlagen en meerdere kappen, met voorgevel gericht op de F.C. Dondersstraat, met negen traveeën brede middenpartij met risalerende centrale ingangspartij opgetrokken tot tuitgevel, het geheel geflankeerd door twee hoektorens, waarvan de linker in de as van de F.C. Dondersstraat. Geheel in baksteen uitgevoerde gevel op natuurstenen plint, witte baksteen banden en diverse natuurstenen decoraties. Middenpartij met rondboogvormige vensters met gekleurde motieven in de bogen, bladmaskers als sluitsteen, schuifvensters en sierankers tussen de vensters, vensters in de middenrisaliet zijn gekoppeld. De ingangspartij is uitgevoerd met natuurstenen driekwartzuiltjes met cannelures en een opbouw met tympaan, klimmend drielichtvenster en diverse sculpturale decoraties. Aan weerszijden van de dubbele deur twee smalle rondboogvormige vensterlichten met daarboven bladmaskers. Topgevel met klimmende spitsboogvensters met glas-in-lood, natuurstenen dekrand en bekroning met bak- en natuursteen en siersmeedwerk. De hoektorens zijn opgebouwd uit drie geledingen onder een vierkante spits. De zuidoostelijke (rechter) toren heeft in het onderste bouwdeel een natuurstenen omlijsting en boven een dubbel rondboogventer een natuurstenen cartouche met het opschrift `liefdadigheid de grondslag van 't geheel'. De tweede torengeleding heeft over de gehele hoogte een rondboogvenster met bakstenen traceringen, de derde bouwgeleding heeft aan iedere zijde vijf gekoppelde smalle rondboogvensters, waarvan de buitenste twee blindnissen zijn. De geledingen worden gescheiden door natuurstenen waterlijsten. Voorts is er geveldecoratie in vorm van speklagen, gekleurde mozaieken in de rondbogen boven de vensters, natuurstenen basementen van de traceringen, natuurstenen sluitstenen en een dubbele tandlijst ter afsluiting onder de goot. De torenspits heeft aan alle zijden dakkapellen, eveneens gedekt met spitsen met daarboven, halverwege de kap, aan alle zijden een kleine dakkapel. Bovenop de torenspits siersmeedwerk. De toren aan de zuidwestzijde (links), in de as van de F.C. Dondersstraat heeft een identieke vormgeving met uitzondering van, in het eerste bouwdeel een cartouche met opschrift `'t Gasthuis voor Ooglijders' en in derde bouwdeel een grote klok. De elf traveeën brede vleugel aan Bleyenburgstraat heeft op de overgang naar de hoofdvleugel een achthoekig torentje onder ingesnoerde spits. Deze zijvleugel heeft een souterrain en drie bouwlagen, de twee traveeën brede hoekrisalieten zijn opgetrokken tot tuitgevels, en hebben dwars geplaatste zadeldaken. De geheel in baksteen uitgevoerde gevel heeft vensters onder rondboog velden met natuurstenen boog- en sluitstenen, boogvulling met geometrisch siermetselwerk en tussen alle vensters sierankers. De bouwlagen worden gescheiden door waterlijsten. In de middenpartij is een verdiept liggende ingangspartij gesitueerd. De beide topgevels zijn identiek met een rechthoekig en rond venster erboven, gevat in decoraties van ondermeer bakstenen geometrische patronen en sierankers. De gevel wordt afgedekt met natuurstenen deklijst en met een bekroning van baksteen, natuursteen en siersmeedwerk. Boven de dakrand zijn drie dakkapellen onder tentdakjes en daarboven vier dakkapellen, voorts nog bijzonder vormgegeven schoorstenen.
Aansluitend aan deze gevel een uitbreiding uit 1938-39 op vierkante plattegrond van drie bouwlagen en plat dak. Deze gevels zijn geheel in rode baksteen opgetrokken, waarbij de tweede bouwlaag terugliggend is uitgevoerd met inpandige galerij, de derde bouwlaag eveneens terugliggend. Beide bouwlagen hebben afscheidingen in glas en ijzer.
Waardering
Voormalig OOGLIJDERSGASTHUIS uit 1892-94 en 1938-39 van algemeen belang vanwege architectuurhistorische waarde als voorbeeld van een in neo-renaissancestijl voorzien van zorgvuldige detailleringen opgetrokken ziekenhuis. The corner towers are built up from three storeys under a square spire. The second tower storey has over its entire height a rounded arch window with brick tracery, the third storey has on each side five coupled narrow rounded arch windows, of which the outer two are blind niches. The storeys are separated by natural stone drip mouldings. Furthermore there is facade decoration in the form of stone bands, coloured mosaics in the rounded arches above the windows, natural stone bases of the tracery, natural stone keystones and a double dentil moulding as closure beneath the gutter. Above the roof edge are three roof dormers under tent roofs and above four roof dormers, furthermore specially shaped chimneys.
Adjacent to this facade an extension from 1938-39 on square plan of three storeys and flat roof. These facades are entirely executed in red brick, whereby the second storey is set back with indoor gallery, the third storey likewise set back. Both storeys have divisions in glass and iron.
