Omschrijving
Hoofdgebouw en kapel van BEJAARDEN- en WEESHUIS, op samengestelde plattegrond, met een symmetrische hoofdopzet bestaande uit een centrale zware vierkante toren met aan weerszijden twee brede lagere vleugels, waarvan aan de uiteinden de bouwwmassa naar voren springt. De middenas wordt naar achter verlengd door de aanwezige kapel met dwarsgeplaatste annex. Het geheel onder een steile met leien gedekte, samengestelde kap. Het centrale deel heeft een souterrain en vier bouwlagen, met aan de vier zijden hoektorentjes, uitgaande van hoekpilasters met verdiepte velden. De vier gevels worden door een rondboogfries onder een balustrade beëindigd.
Bakstenen muur met muurdammen aan de zuidzijde van het terrein, oprijzend vanuit de Minstroom.
Beide vleugels hebben een souterrain en twee bouwlagen. De gehele voorgevel met 2x(1+2) schuifvensters onder segmentboog geplaatst. De vensters in het bovenste deel van de centrale toren zijn gezet in gotische spaarbogen. Voorts in de gevels ondermeer sierlijke ankers, een neo-gotisch rondboogfries en andere neo-gotische elementen in baksteen. Oorspronkelijk langs de gehele gevel een balustrade, nu alleen nog langs de zijgevels.
Hoofdingang gesitueerd in het centrale bouwdeel bereikbaar via een dubbele bordestrap. Onderaan de trap en op het bordes in totaal vier schilddragende leeuwen. Boven de ingang vier (lege) witte sokkels en baldakijnen. De zijgevels zijn in vergelijkbare trant als de voorgevel uitgevoerd en hebben een middenrisaliet. De achtergevel is eveneens in dezelfde stijl uitgevoerd, met tegen de middenas een neo-gotische kapel.
De kapel met driezijdige koorsluiting bezit tot onder de goot eindigende steunberen die in de langsgevels de vijf vensters van elkaar scheiden. De begane grond is blind uitgevoerd, de verdieping glas-in-loodvensters. Op de kap een rijzige dakruiter.
Het interieur is voor wat betreft indeling nagenoeg ongewijzigd en bezit nog vele interieuronderdelen.
Interieur van het hoofdgebouw met centraal trappenhuis in de middentoren, doorlopend tot in bovenste deel van de toren. In het hoofdgebouw op de bel-etage een entreehal en de diverse gangen die hier op uit komen. In de hoofdgang zijn de oorspronkelijke deuren en lambrisering aanwezig, onder meer die naar de bestuurskamer. Hier bevindt zich een grote gotische schouw en zandstenen consoles die de moerbalken van de samengestelde kap dragen, beide afkomstig uit het middeleeuwse huis Zoudenbalch, voorts een oorspronkelijke parketvloer en lambrizering.
Voorts nog aanwezig een middeleeuwse schouw uit Zoudenbalch (nu in de fysiotherapie-ruimte) en enkele neogotische schoorsteenpartijen.
De oorspronkelijke kap - gedeeltelijk later ingericht met een aantal kamertjes - heeft nog droogbalken voor het wasgoed.
Ook de kapel met kruisribgewelven, is in redelijk goede staat bewaard gebleven. De sacristie is gesitueerd op de verdieping aan de noordzijde. De orgeltribune rust op geklonken ijzeren bogen. Tegen de zijgevel van de kapel is een houten serre aangebouwd, 5 traveeën lang en één travee breed. De traveeën worden gescheiden door slanke zuiltjes met rijk bewerkte kapitelen.
Waardering
Bejaardenhuis met kapel van algemeen belang vanwege de architectuurhistorische waarde als voorbeeld van een in Neo-Gotiek opgetrokken verzorgingstehuis en als onderdeel van het oeuvre van architect A. Tepe. Het interieur is tevens van algemeen belang vanwege de bouwhistorische waarde vanwege de diverse gotische elementen uit het voormalige Zoudenbalch-huis.
Voorts is het geheel van algemeen belang vanwege de stedenbouwkundige waarde vanwege de markante ligging aan de Maliesingel, tegenover de Abstederbrug. Het pand heeft ensemblewaarde in relatie met de overige complexonderdelen.

Main building and chapel of RETIREMENT and ORPHANAGE, on a complex floor plan, with a symmetrical main layout consisting of a central heavy square tower with on either side two broad lower wings, of which at the ends the building mass projects forward. The central axis is extended to the rear by the present chapel with transversely placed annex. The whole under a steep slate-covered, complex roof structure. The central part has a basement and four storeys, with corner turrets on all four sides, extending from corner pilasters with recessed fields. The four facades are terminated by a round-arch frieze under a balustrade.
Brick wall with wall buttresses on the south side of the site, rising from the Minstroom.
