Inleiding
Het voormalige RAADHUIS van Escharen dateert uit 1876 en is een sober blokvormig gebouw met tegen de voorgevel een markante, hoge trap. Tegen de achtergevel is omstreeks 1900 een blokvormige cel gebouwd. Uit deze tijd stamt ook de trapgevelachtige topgevel van de façade, die is toegevoegd om het gebouw meer aanzien te verlenen. Het gebouw heeft een neo-gotische detaillering. Sinds de opheffing van de gemeente is het pand als dubbelwoning in gebruik.
Beschrijving
Het tweelaags gebouw heeft een rechthoekige plattegrond (met kleine, oorspronkelijke achteraanbouw) en wordt gedekt door een schilddak met oud Hollandse pannen. Op het dak een kleine dakruiter en twee schoorstenen. De bakstenen gevels zijn geleed door gemetselde hoeklisenen, een gepleisterde plint en, ter hoogte van de beletage, een cordonlijst met muizetand. Tegen de gevels zijn gietijzeren schotelankers aangebracht. De symmetrische voorgevel telt drie vensterassen en gaat op de begane grond voor een groot deel schuil achter de bordestrap.
Deze in blokverband gecementeerde trap heeft hardstenen treden en leidt naar het centrale, door een gestuct kruisribgewelf overkluisde portiek van de beletage, dat wordt geflankeerd door getoogde zesruits schuifvensters met hardstenen dorpels.
Hier was het voormalige raadhuis gevestigd. De trapleuning heeft gietijzeren balusters en kolommen. In het neo-gotische bordeshekwerk is naast Maria met Kind het gemeentewapen afgebeeld met de tekst: "Gemeente Escharen 1876". In het portiek geeft een vleugelpaneeldeur met gietijzeren roosters, zinken deurgrepen en een gedeeld bovenlicht toegang tot de centrale hal. Het portiek heeft verder een deels hardstenen, deels marmeren vloer en twee gevelstenen met de inscripties: "J.
Cuppen / Burgemeester / P. Jacobs / Secretaris / 9-6-1876" en "M. Geurts / M. Poos / Wethouders". In zowel de zuidelijke als de noordelijke zijgevel van de beletage zijn twee zesruits schuifvensters aangebracht. De voorgevel heeft omstreeks 1900 een topgevel gekregen, bestaande uit bakstenen trappen, gescheiden door lage pijlers.
De begane grond wordt ingenomen door een voormalige veldwachterswoning. Deze is toegankelijk via een paneeldeur met smeedijzeren roosters en gedeeld bovenlicht in de bordestrap. In de voorgevel wordt de woning, in de as van de vensters van de beletage, verlicht door twee getoogde lichten onder wenkbrauwbogen. In de beide zijgevels zijn elk twee zesruits schuifvensters aangebracht. Aan de noordelijke zijde bevindt zich tussen deze vensters een kelderlicht met opkamervenster. De achtergevel is op de begane grond deels gewijzigd, heeft op de etage zesruits schuifvensters en wordt voor een deel aan het oog onttrokken door de latere aanbouw van de cel. Deze tweelaags aanbouw onder plat dak heeft in de zuidelijke gevel een geklonken plaatijzeren deur met twee getraliede bovenlichten. Tegen het huis staat aan de oostelijke zijde een eenlaags schopje met rechthoekige plattegrond, een zadeldak gedekt met oud Hollandse pannen en een klein stalvenster met spinnekop.
Waardering
Het voormalige raadhuis is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorisch belang als voorbeeld van de bestuurlijke ontwikkeling van oostelijk Noord-Brabant en als voorbeeld van de typologische ontwikkeling van het kleine raadhuis op het platteland. Het heeft architectuurhistorische waarde vanwege de sobere stijl en detaillering. Het gebouw is belangrijk vanwege de gaafheid van het exterieur. Introduction
The former TOWN HALL of Escharen dates from 1876 and is a modest block-shaped building with a striking, high staircase against the front facade. Around 1900, a block-shaped cell was built against the rear facade. From this period also dates the stepped gable-like top gable of the facade, which was added to give the building more distinction. The building has neo-gothic detailing. Since the dissolution of the municipality, the premises have been in use as a double dwelling.
Description
The two-storey building has a rectangular floor plan (with small, original rear extension) and is covered by a hipped roof with old Dutch tiles. On the roof a small roof dormer and two chimneys. The brick facades are articulated by chamfered stone quoins, a plastered plinth and, at the level of the first floor, a cordoned string course with dentil moulding. Cast-iron decorative wall anchors are attached to the facades. The symmetrical front facade has three window bays and is largely concealed at ground level behind the perron staircase.
This staircase, jointed in block bond cement, has stone steps and leads to the central porticus of the first floor, which is covered by a stuccoed cross-ribbed vault, and is flanked by arched six-light sash windows with stone sills.
This is where the former town hall was located. The stair rail has cast-iron balusters and columns. In the neo-gothic perron railwork, beside Maria with Child, the municipal coat of arms is depicted with the text: "Gemeente Escharen 1876". This two-storey extension under a flat roof has in the southern facade a riveted sheet-iron door with two grilled fanlights. Against the house on the eastern side stands a single-storey shed with rectangular floor plan, a gabled roof covered with old Dutch tiles and a small stable window with spinneret.
Valuation
The former town hall is of general importance. It has cultural-historical significance as an example of the administrative development of eastern North Brabant and as an example of the typological development of the small rural town hall.
