Inleiding
Waardering

Description
Introduction
The R.K. CHURCH, dedicated to St. Lambertus, is in its original design an oriented single-aisle, neo-gothic church with a gable tower from 1863, by architect H.C. Dobbe. In 1930 the church was extended on the northern side with an aisle and a transept arm.
Description The church building originally had a rectangular plan with a nave of four bays, to which via two narrower choir bays a three-sided closed apse is joined. The church is covered by gabled roofs with slated tiles in Maas roofing. On the southern side of the church the original situation is still visible. In the simple handmade brick facades, braced by buttresses, a pointed-arch window with double lancet and rose window is installed per bay. Against the third bay stands a built-in confessional. In the choir bays and apse, the high lancet windows consist of a double lancet with six-lobed rose window. On the western side stands an attached gable tower of three storeys. This consists of three storeys. The first two storeys consist of the portal with pointed-arch tympanum and a high window with tracery of three lancets, crowned by three four-lobed rose windows. Above the coupled sound-holes with half-column and twelve-lobed rose window rises a pinched octagonal spire with clockwork. In the western facade six hard- and sandstone facade stones are set. Above the portal on the left side is a stone placed with a shield bearing the text: "S P Q E". On the right side an identical stone with in the French language an enumeration of virtues. To the left and right of the tower two times two stones are set, of which only the lowest on the northern side is legible: "Proto + Petra / Viro-Nobilissimo / Henrico-de-la-Geneste / protonotario-apostolico / + posita +". In 1930 on the northern side over three bays of the nave a low aisle under a lean-to roof, with simple pointed-arch windows was built. Against the fourth bay a transept arm arose then with built-out confessionals and a one-storey adjacent boiler room. In the transept several pointed-arch windows with composite mule-back arch tracery. Against the eastern side of this transept arm was simultaneously built a chapel with half-round closure. On the western side the aisle was likewise half-round closed, so that here too a chapel space was created. Through these interventions the building acquired an asymmetrical plan. In the church on the organ gallery a four-stop organ, originally placed in the balustrade, possibly from 1759. It was placed here in 1843 by F.C. Smits. The instrument contains pipework older than 1759 and may have been made in that latter year by the Geert organ maker Paules van Yesdonk.
Five-part front with central and side towers. On the towers and against the church sculptural work by the Uden sculptor Petrus Verhoeven.
Valuation
The church is of general interest. The building has cultural-historical importance as a special expression of the development of catholicism in the south and is also of importance as an example of the typological development of the single-aisle village church. The building has architectural-historical importance by the style and the detailing is also of importance as an example of the oeuvre of architect Werten. It has ensemble values because of the special situation, connected with the development of the church village Escharen. It is of importance because of the architectural-historical and typological rarity.
