Inleiding

Waardering

Introduction

The LATRINE BUILDINGS O, Q, N and P are located on the western and eastern sides of the site. The latrine buildings date from 1938-'39 and were the first to be built with the barracks buildings. For reasons of hygiene the lavatories were not situated in the barracks buildings, but, except at D1 and E1, in a small building next to the barracks building. After the Second World War the buildings lost their function. Currently they stand empty or are used for storage.

Description

The single-storey buildings N and O have a rectangular floor plan, while those of P and Q are square. N and O are covered by a hipped roof, P and Q by a pyramidal roof. Both are covered with improved Dutch tiles. The façades are built in brick and have a portico on the side of the barracks buildings, from which one can reach the interior.

In all cases this interior has been altered. Light enters via rectangular lights set high in the façade, fitted with iron window frames.

Valuation

The latrine buildings of the barracks are of general interest. They have cultural-historical importance as an example of an administrative and strategic development, namely the establishment of a barracks as part of the Peel-Raam Line, an important component of national defence, and as an example of the typological development of barracks in the interwar period. From an architectural-historical perspective they are important because of the style applied by the engineering departments and because of the use of materials. The whole is important because of its situation, connected with the strategic development of the ancient fortified city of Grave. It is important because of the integrity of interior and exterior.
