- als representatief en relatief gaaf bewaarde grootschalige aanleg in vroege landschapsstijl, typerend voor grotere buitenplaatsen op de Veluwe aan het einde van de l8de eeuw;
- als belangrijk voorbeeld van een vermoedelijk laat l8de-eeuwse Nederlandse grootschalige parkaanleg in landschapsstijl met verrijkingen uit de eerste helft van de l9de eeuw;

Description
Description
HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT. Large-scale park layout in landscape style with park meadows, winding lanes and paths, pond features, sight-lines, specimen trees and groups of trees, park woodlands and production forests with winding paths, around House Hoekelum and House Noordereng, enriched with garden ornaments, garden houses, buildings and outbuildings, which together form the cultural-historical landscape of the historic country estate Hoekelum. The park layout of Hoekelum still contains several elements traceable to the 17th century, such as the Laarse allee (Wageningse weg), which as a cross-axis intersects the view from the house in an easterly direction, and the moat, which was presumably reworked in landscape style at the end of the 18th century. The layout of the park at Hoekelum dates presumedly from the end of the 18th century, at the time when Hoekelum was owned by Gerrit Willem van Balveren, burgomaster of Nijmegen. In 1787 he has, possibly in emulation of the great hall of the country estate Biljoen, at Hoekelum the great hall furnished with stucco decorations by the Tyrolean stucco-worker Lauran Rief with views and decorations in stucco, and presumably then, as at Biljoen and Beekhuizen, brought the romantic layout into being, which is still largely preserved today. As at Biljoen and Beekhuizen, the geographical location of the terrain of Hoekelum, situated on the western flank of the Veluwe, was, through the presence of springs and pronounced undulation, eminently suited to the creation of an early landscape park layout. These characteristics of early landscape-style layout, also called Swiss style, are found in particular in the park woodland section on the north side of Hoekelum, with deeply incised strongly curved stream beds, small-scale hill formations, remnants of winding sinuous paths and with an ice house in a hill formation. The layout of the pond features around the house and the strongly undulating park meadow to the rear and side of the house likewise suggest that this section also dates from the end of the 18th century. Originally the meadow behind House Hoekelum was much more enclosed in atmosphere, as can still be seen on old aerial photographs and topographical maps. The expansive character of the layout behind the house was realized in the early 1990s of the 20th century, by laying out a broad historicizing sight-line to the highest point of the country estate. The park meadow in front of the house, with the wood-flanked sight-line over the Edeseweg and views in southwesterly and northwesterly directions dates presumedly from the first half of the 19th century, presumedly after 1819, from the time of the couple Van Wassenaer-Van Balveren. This layout in the manner of Jan David Zocher jr. is much more spacious than the previously mentioned park layout in landscape style, although originally the perspective effect was greater through the larger number of tree groups and specimen trees than at present, as can be clearly seen on the topographical map from 1910. The obelisk erected further back in the park in 1859 (RM 527126) commemorates the many reclamations and afforestation of new forests by Otto van Wassenaar and also names the overseer of these works since 1820, Gerrit van Hoogstraten. The landscape layout with park meadow surrounded by trees around House Noordereng with views between both houses, dates presumedly from around 1849, when House Noordereng was built. Van Wassenaer enriched the layout of the country estate with the planting of production forest, as was usual on country estates on the Veluwe and Utrecht Hill Ridge in this period. This forest planting was also the setting for extensive walks over winding paths, as can be seen well on old topographical maps and currently on the terrain.
Valuation
The HISTORIC PARK LAYOUT of the country estate Hoekelum is of general cultural-historical and architectural importance:
- as a representative and relatively well-preserved large-scale layout in early landscape style, characteristic of larger country estates on the Veluwe at the end of the 18th century;
- as an important example of a presumedly late 18th-century Dutch large-scale park layout in landscape style with additions from the first half of the 19th century;
- as a rare example of landscape interweaving of two parks in landscape style around the two main buildings on a historic country estate.
