Omschrijving

Waardering

De HISTORISCHE TUIN- EN PARKAANLEG is van belang

- vanwege de ouderdom en gaafheid van de structuur;

- als voorbeeld van een eenvoudige aanleg binnen de historisch gegroeide situatie;

- vanwege de monumentale, met geknotte linden beplante toegangslaan;

- vanwege de wandeling met uitzichtheuveltje rond de omgrachte weide;

- vanwege de samenhang met de andere complexonderdelen.

Component 2

Description

HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT. In the historic garden layout of Dekemastate, the functional use has predominated from ancient times, with possibly a modest ornamental design. Until the restoration of 1999-2000, there was neglect and deferred maintenance. In the course of the restoration of the estate in 1998-1999, the northwestern part of the garden was redesigned in 1999-2000. Due to lack of reliable and detailed historical information, an attempt was made to create an image of how it might have been. Some prints and cadastral maps provided support for this. Until the 17th century, the area around the estate mainly consisted of functional land, arable and pasture. Apart from some modest landscape adaptations, this situation still exists.

The garden and park layout consists of the centrally located house island with forecourt and rear courtyard, to the east of that a moated pasture (the youngling yard), to the south of that a forecourt between the house island and the gardener's lodge (the forecourt), to the west of that utility and ornamental gardens, a strip of woodland along the northern border between the Jelsumer Vaart and the moated pasture (the new wood) and a number of avenues and walking paths. The forecourt and rear courtyard on the house island were redesigned in 1999-2000. The forecourt originally had a simple formal layout, in which the four garden vases were arranged and possibly also the sundial. The northern part was originally presumably used as a bleaching area. In the current situation, the forecourt has been formally redesigned around the centrally placed sundial. The four vases have been moved to the ornamental garden to the west of the house island. The rear courtyard is partially paved and provided with a modest herb garden. The moated sheep pasture to the east of the estate is called the youngling yard. On a map from 1820, the western part was laid out as an orchard. Around the pasture stand a number of alders, possibly remnants of an old (18th-century) alder avenue. On this moated pasture, the little dog Nicko of the writer Havanck is buried. The space between the house island and the gardener's lodge, where the drive ends in a curved path, is called the forecourt. The 19th-century landscape design of a round lawn with a surrounding path is still present in structure here. In the middle of the lawn stood the Flora statue, which was moved to the ornamental garden to the west of the house island during the renovation work of 1999-2000. The area to the west of the house island is bounded on the north and west sides by a garden wall with a cavity dating from 1910, which functions as a warmth wall. In 1999-2000, this area was redesigned. The southern part has been laid out as an ornamental garden. On an almost square lawn, the cast-iron garden vases are arranged in the four corners around the centrally placed Flora statue. Northwest of this ornamental garden stands the glasshouse. The transition to the northern part, which has been laid out as an orchard, is formed by a pergola. Espalier fruit has been planted along the garden wall. In the northern part of the estate grounds lies a strip of woodland, called the new wood. This was originally a plot of arable land north of the moated pasture, which was planted with trees in 1975. A winding walking path runs through the wood, connecting to the old winding circuit walk around the pasture. The northern side is bounded by the Noorderlaan which runs along the Jelsumer Vaart.

The avenue and path system consists of the drive (the Swarte Singel), a second access lane (the Finsterbuorrensingel), the Noorderlaan and the circuit walk around the youngling yard and through the new wood. The drive runs from the Dekemawei to the forecourt and is planted with monumental pollarded linden trees. On both the Dekemawei side and the transition from the drive to the forecourt, two wooden gate posts marked the lane. These were reconstructed around 2000. The Finsterbuorrensingel runs from the forecourt to the hamlet Finsterbuorren and is planted with trees of various kinds. This lane has no further markings. The Noorderlaan runs along the northern side of the Jelsumer Vaart and crosses in the east the Kastanjelaan planted with chestnuts, which runs along the eastern side of the moated pasture (the youngling yard). With a younger, 19th-century winding path, which runs along the southern side of this pasture, and a relatively recent path winding through the new wood, the Kastanjelaan forms a circuit walk around the moated pasture. The 19th-century winding path is originally possibly an older lane that was transformed into a double meander in landscape style. Nowadays there is still one meander present. In the eastern corner, at the intersection of the mentioned meander with the Kastanjelaan, a small hill has been raised, which forms a viewpoint over the meadows. On Dekemastate, many different stinzen plants occur, including holwort, wood hyacinth, forest tulip, cuckoo pint and common and drooping star-of-Bethlehem.

Valuation

The HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT is of significance

- because of the age and integrity of the structure;

- as an example of a simple layout within the historically developed situation;

- because of the monumental access avenue planted with pollarded linden trees;

- because of the walk with viewpoint hill around the moated pasture;

- because of the relationship with the other complex components.
