Omschrijving
Inleiding
Mulder.

Description
Introduction
BOILER HOUSE, component of the flour mill complex 'De Sleutels', built in 1896 after design by W.C. Mulder. The boiler house is situated on the north-east side of the factory grounds, on a nearly rectangular plan with a stairwell added later at the west side.
Description
The boiler house, built in on two sides and comprising six storeys, is covered by a concrete barrel vault (now surfaced with bitumen). The northern side has three window bays on the left in an otherwise closed facade. In two window bays there are six-pane casement windows on some floors arranged in arcaded form. The windows in the third bay are blocked. In the middle of the facade, halfway up, there are two cast-iron twelve-pane windows below a semi-circular fanlight. On the right a similar round-arched window is blocked. The facade terminates under a modern railing at the height of the roof gutter with a frieze of segmental arches in which a water spout projects as a keystone. The west facade contains, apart from the later-added stairwell on its right, a window bay with hoist-shutter openings fitted with beaded-edge doors. The top storey above the hoist rail contains a steel balcony under a substantial overhang. The interior consists of an iron skeleton constructed from rolled main and secondary beams with I-profile supporting cast-iron columns. These end in a U-shaped uniquely detailed column head of two bolted cast-iron packing pieces with the main beam of the trough vaults between them. The concrete barrel vault of the roof is reinforced every three metres by iron profiles that repeat the form of the vault.
Valuation
Boiler house (1896), of general interest as a historic-functional component of the flour mill complex 'De Sleutels' and by virtue of its architectural and cultural-historical value as a well-preserved example of a utility building with distinctive detailing and an early application of concrete and iron construction, as nowadays a rare example of a building from the early phase of concrete construction combined with an iron skeleton. Of ensemble value in relation to the other components of the flour mill complex. Also of interest as a significant component from the oeuvre of Leiden architect W.C. Mulder.
