Former MARGARINE AND CHEESE FACTORY with adjoining OFFICE and DWELLING, built in the years 1889-1895 on behalf of the firm J. Laming & Sons, designed by J.P. Stok Wzn. in neo-Renaissance style. Following the bankruptcy of the Laming firm, the complex was taken over in 1919 by the firm Hulstkamp & Zoon & Molijn (distillery and liqueur production).

Description:

Building situated on the corner of Thorbeckestraat/Maaskade, constructed in red brick with natural stone bands, diamond blocks and cordon mouldings, of partly one and partly four storeys. The building volume on the south-western side of one storey and the south-western third part of the building volume of four storeys is provided with a basement. The representative part of the building (oriented towards the Maaskade) is provided with a stone base with rustication motif and diamond blocks. The building has on the Maaskade and Burgemeester Hoffmanstraat sides a slate-clad hipped roof, whilst the building volume between is crowned by three parallel gabled roofs.

The visible roof surfaces of these are likewise clad with slate, the roof surfaces on the other side with tiles. The middle gabled roof (above the original factory hall) was originally covered with wire glass, resting on iron rods. The high front facade on the Maaskade has a tripartite division which is articulated by the two slightly projecting end sections, which are provided with high stepped gables, and a middle section crowned with four smaller stepped gablelets. The facade on the Thorbeckestraat has, at the far north, one stepped gable. The stepped gables are partially built up and richly decorated with scrolls, shell motifs and vases. The main entrance is located in the middle on the Maaskade and is provided with two bronze coat-of-arms shields. This middle section is further marked by four half-columns with richly decorated bronze bases (Neptune and Mercury), signed by S. Miedema. Between these, between the windows, bronze half-pilasters. In the left section one entrance provided with lanterns with on either side a window, in the right section two entrances (of which the left one with lanterns) with between them three round-arch windows. The (sash) windows, with wooden frames, are arched and rectangular (upper storey and middle section ground floor Maaskade) and on the first storey provided with natural stone lintels. On the first storey on the Maaskade, in the middle of the left section, an oriel window with natural stone base, a wooden window frame and a roof cap with richly decorated small roof chamber. On the corner Maaskade/Thorbeckestraat is located an arched opening, resting on a heavy natural stone console and crowned with an open wooden turret. The eastern facade (Thorbeckestraat) beyond the representative part - adjoining the Maaskade facade - is further simply detailed with speckled courses in which diamond headers. On the roof are located four roof dormers. On the ground floor, to the left of the representative part, is located the original entrance to the dwelling house with on either side of the wooden door - with tripartite fanlight with stained glass windows - natural stone pilasters and above the cornice an aedicula around a medallion with the initial "L" (Laming). To the left on the ground floor two arched access gates to the factory. The western facade is blind as there was a desire to extend the building on this side. The rear facade (Burgemeester Hoffmanstraat) has on the ground floor 14 double narrow high windows with central mullion. On the first and second storeys seven two-light windows with relieving arches and on the fourth storey seven less high rectangular windows. On the roof are located two rectangular roof dormers. Internally the building is partially altered. The hall, accessed from the Maaskade, still in its original condition (lined with tiles: a black plinth, yellow/brick-red lower edge, above this a honeycomb motif) gives via a wooden partition wall with large arched windows access to a large hall with a low and high section. The ceiling of the low section is supported by three large decorated cast-iron columns. The adjoining high hall, which in its length direction is perpendicular to the Maaskade, is provided with a glass roof truss structure which is supported by wooden and cast-iron arches. Three continuous, modernised galleries give access to the office spaces. From the still original entrance a wooden staircase gives access to the storeys, of which the corridor and two of the office rooms on the first storey are still in the original neo-Renaissance style with wall panelling, ceilings, fireplace mantels, mirrors and chandeliers. In two of the fanlights stained glass windows, depicting scenes which tell the history of the building. The left window dated "Anno 1879", the right window "1919". Between the two rooms is located a massive iron Lips safe. At the end of the corridor is still the original toilet with decorated entrance hall and small fountain present. In the side section of the building, accessed from the Torbeckestraat, is located a second stairwell which gave access to the dwelling house of the Laming family. In the stucco work are incorporated in medallions portraits of the Laming children. In the stairwells and corridors are mostly still present the original stained glass windows.

Valuation:

The Hulstkamp building is of general importance by virtue of its architectural and cultural-historical and typological value, and is also of importance by virtue of its image-defining value in the riverside front of the Maaskade.
