Inleiding:
MONUMENT voor G.J. de Jongh, behorend bij de museumtuin van het complex Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. Het monument, uitgevoerd als een open paviljoen met muurwerk en terrassen, bevindt zich precies in de as van de museumtuin en vormt daarvan de formele afsluiting aan de zuidzijde.
Omschrijving:
Geheel ommuurd, uit verschillende onderdelen samengesteld, MONUMENT voor G.J. de Jongh, directeur Gemeentewerken van Rotterdam van 1879 tot 1910, deel uitmakend van het museumcomplex. Tussen 1928 en 1935 opgericht naar ontwerp van A. van der Steur. Het monument, uitgevoerd als open paviljoen, bevat een twaalf meter hoge gedenknaald van blokken Scandinavisch graniet met een bronzen buste van De Jongh en hieronder op een plaquette de inscriptie: "G.J DE JONGH, 1845-1917".
Achter de gedenknaald een halfronde muur waarin een gebeeldhouwd reliëf van H. Chabot met daarop demografische en haventechnische gegevens afgebeeld, over respectievelijk de groei van de "moderne" stad en de haven tussen 1879 en 1910. In een ommuurde halve cirkel van zandsteen rondom het monument bevinden zich houten banken. Aan de vijverzijde een gietijzeren/bronzen hek ontworpen door L. Bolle met voorstellingen uit de praktijk en stedelijk leven van de Dienst Gemeentewerken. Hierachter, op een betonnen plateau in de vijver, een mozaïek van J.W. Gidding dat het stadsplan van Rotterdam en haar omgeving aan het einde van de jaren twintig van de 20ste eeuw verbeeldt met de onder De Jongh geannexeerde gemeentes: Charlois, Katendrecht, Kralingen en Delfshaven en, compleet met hun stadswapens, de buurtgemeenten: Vlaardingen, Schiedam en Overschie. Naast het mozaïek de inscriptie: "Beeld van gedachten en arbeid van G.J. de Jongh, Directeur der Gemeentewerken van Rotterdam 1879-1910".
