Inleiding
Met invloed van Neo-Gotiek in 1891 naar een ontwerp van de Franciscaner broeder M. Klein gebouwde KLOOSTERKAPEL en KLOOSTERVLEUGEL.
De kloosterkapel maakt deel uit van het L-vormige kloostercomplex van de Broeders Franciscanen. Het betreft een zogenoemd Kulturkampfklooster. De kloosterkapel bevindt zich in lengterichting aan de straatzijde, de kloostervleugel staat haaks op de linkerzijgevel van de kloosterkapel.
Naast de oprit naar het klooster staat een Sint Jozefbeeld uit 1906 met hieromheen een drietal rode beuken.
Omschrijving
KLOOSTERKAPEL De zaalkerk telt vijf traveeën, de koorzijde wordt afgesloten met een vijfhoekige absis. De zaalkerk wordt afgedekt met een zadeldak met zwarte pannen. Naaldspits met leien dak. Frontgevel deels gepleisterde plint, opstand baksteen met metselwerk in kruisverband, steunberen met hardstenen afdekplaten. Onder de dakrand spitsboogvormige boogfriezen op kleine consoles.
Hoge spitsboogvormige glas-in-lood vensters met hardstenen dorpelstenen en sluitstenen.
Aan de achtergevel van de kapel een uitbouw in twee bouwlagen met lessenaars dak over de gehele breedte van de kapel. In de eerste bouwlaag rechthoekige vensters met bovenlichten, in de tweede bouwlaag spitsboogvensters met bovenlichten met geleding. In de linkerzijgevel van deze uitbouw in de eerste bouwlaag een rechthoekig houten venster met spitsboogvormig bovenlicht, venster voorzien van traliewerk. In de tweede bouwlaag een rechthoekig houten venster met spitsboogvormig bovenlicht met geleding. Beide vensters met hardstenen dorpelstenen en sluitstenen. Van het INTERIEUR is onder meer van belang: het schip afgedekt met kruisribgewelven, voorzien van ribben en kraagstenen. De absis heeft een vijfhoekig kalot, eveneens met ribben. Paneeldeuren met rijk houtsnijwerk. In de achterwand van de kapel zijn de authentieke houten communiebanken herplaatst: rijk houtsnijwerk met diverse Bijbelse voorstellingen. Oxaal met houten balustrade met rijk houtsnijwerk met o.a. twee musicerende engelen. Op het oxaal een kerkorgel uit 1908 vervaardigd door de firma Stahlhut uit Aken.
Orgelkast met rijk houtsnijwerk met o.a. twee musicerende engelen.
Authentieke altaarvloer met tegels met hierin een bloemmotief. Ribben in de altaar wanden rusten op consoles in de vorm van dierenkoppen, deze symboliseren de vier Evangelisten.
Neogotisch hoofdaltaar met rijk houtsnijwerk en voorzien van twee uitklapbare panelen; houtsnijwerk met o.a. vier voorstellingen uit de jeugd van Christus; op de achterwand van de twee panelen voorstellingen geschilderd in olieverf. Neogotisch Sint Josefaltaar met rijk houtsnijwerk met o.a. twee voorstellingen uit het leven van Sint Josef. Neogotisch Maria-altaar met rijk houtsnijwerk met o.a. twee taferelen uit het leven van Sint Aloysius.
Altaren, communiebank, balustrade van oxaal, en orgelkast vervaardigd door de Broeders Franciscanen Vitus, Joachim en Agathon.
Neogotische Godslamp opgehangen aan drie kettingen.
Glas-in-lood vensters van atelier H. Oidtmann te Linnich (Duitsland) van omstreeks 1900, atelier Essers te Roermond (1958) en atelier Vaessen te Vught.
Bij de ingang van kapel in een nis in de zijwand een houten Mariabeeld, XV, toegeschreven aan beeldhouwer D. Holthuys.

KLOOSTERVLEUGEL Entree in kopgevel van omstreeks 1980. Kopgevel telt drie bouwlagen en drie venstertraveeën, in elke travee een groot spitsboogvormig spaarveld met hardstenen sluitsteen. Zadeldak met Hollandse pannen. Dakkapellen met naaldspits met leien. In de eerste en tweede bouwlaag vier rechthoekige houten vensters met segmentboogvormige bovenlichten, bovenlichten tweede bouwlaag met accentuering in stucwerk. In de derde bouwlaag vier rechthoekige houten vensters met spitsboogvormige bovenlichten, tussen de twee middelste vensters een Sint Franciscusbeeld op een console en onder een baldakijn. Frontgevel uitlopend in een topgevel met hierin een rechthoekig houten venster met spitsboogvormig bovenlicht. Topgevel met schouderstukken en bekroning met bol-ornament. Vensters met hardstenen dorpelsteen.
Rechterzijgevel telt drie bouwlagen en zeventien venstertraveeën. In de eerste en tweede bouwlaag rechthoekige houten vensters met segmentboogvormige bovenlichten. In de derde bouwlaag rechthoekige houten vensters met spitsboogvormige bovenlichten met hardstenen sluitsteen. Aan de onderzijde van de vensters in de derde bouwlaag een doorlopende hardstenen waterlijst. Linkerzijgevel vrijwel identiek aan de rechterzijgevel. Geveldeel van linkerzijgevel uitlopend in een topgevel met hierin een rondboogvormig spaarveld en een rechthoekig houten venster met spitsboogvormig bovenlicht. Topgevel met schouderstukken en trapgevelbekroning.
Interieurindeling in redelijke mate in tact met o.a. brede kloostergang met authentieke tegelvloer en trappenhuis met authentieke trapleuningen met decoratieve houten spijlen en houten handlijst.
Naast de oprit naar het klooster staat een Sint Jozefbeeld in natuursteen uit 1906 op een bakstenen basement.
Waardering
Het klooster en de kapel van de Broeders Franciscanen, gebouwd als Kulturkampfklooster, zijn van cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een geestelijke en een typologische ontwikkeling van katholieke kloosters uit het laatste kwart van de 19de eeuw. De kloosterkapel en in mindere mate de kloostervleugel bezitten architectuurhistorische waarde vanwege het bijzondere belang voor de geschiedenis van de bovenregionale architectuur, wegens de hoogwaardige esthetische kwaliteiten van het ontwerp, de belangwekkende inventaris van de kapel en de inrichting. CONVENT CHAPEL The hall church comprises five bays, the choir side is closed off with a pentagonal apse. The hall church is covered with a gabled roof with black tiles. Spire with slate roof. Front facade partly plastered plinth, brick superstructure with masonry in English bond, buttresses with ashlar coping. Below the eaves ornamental pointed-arch friezes on small consoles.

In the second storey a rectangular wooden window with pointed-arch fanlight with glazing bars. Both windows with ashlar cills and keystones. From the INTERIOR, the following are noteworthy: the nave covered with cross rib vaults, fitted with ribs and corbels. The apse has a pentagonal vault, likewise with ribs. Panelled doors with rich wood carving. In the rear wall of the chapel the authentic wooden communion benches have been repositioned: rich wood carving with various Biblical representations. Rood loft with wooden balustrade with rich wood carving including two music-making angels. On the rood loft an organ from 1908 manufactured by the firm Stahlhut from Aachen.

Front facade ending in a gable with a rectangular wooden window with pointed-arch fanlight. Gable with shoulder pieces and crest with ball ornament. Windows with ashlar cill.
Right side wall comprises three storeys and seventeen window bays. In the first and second storey rectangular wooden windows with segmental-arch fanlights. In the third storey rectangular wooden windows with pointed-arch fanlights with ashlar keystone. At the base of the windows in the third storey a continuous ashlar drip moulding. Left side wall virtually identical to the right side wall. Gable section of left side wall ending in a gable with a round-arch spandrel and a rectangular wooden window with pointed-arch fanlight. Gable with shoulder pieces and stepped-gable crest.
Interior layout largely intact including a wide cloister walk with authentic tile floor and staircase with authentic stair railings with decorative wooden balusters and wooden handrail.
Beside the drive to the convent stands a Saint Joseph statue in natural stone from 1906 on a brick base.
Valuation
The convent and chapel of the Franciscan Brothers, built as a Kulturkampf convent, are of cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a spiritual and a typological development of Catholic convents from the last quarter of the 19th century. The convent chapel and to a lesser extent the convent wing possess architectural-historical value due to their special significance for the history of supra-regional architecture, because of the high-quality aesthetic qualities of the design, the noteworthy inventory of the chapel and its furnishings. The convent with the chapel possess ensemble value because of the special significance of the object for the appearance of the municipality of Kerkrade. Convent and in particular the convent chapel are of general importance on the grounds of cultural-historical value and the architectural integrity of exterior and interior.
