Inleiding

Introduction

THEATER called Aula Maior and belonging to the Rolduc complex. The theater was designed in 1936 by the architect Ir. Jos Cuypers. The architectural style is influenced by Neo-Classicism. With regard to the acoustics of the theater hall, advice was given by Ir. Lyon from Paris.

Description

The floor plan of the Aula Maior has a somewhat oval-shaped main form. The construction consists of a steel frame, filled with brick. The front section for the theater hall comprises two storeys and is topped with a flat roof. The central risalite is topped with a gabled roof. The theater hall has a slightly undulating flat roof.

The symmetrical front facade has a central risalite which is closed with a tympanum. The risalite is bordered on the sides with blocks of natural stone. In the risalite, three rectangular wooden entrance doors with rounded-arch fanlights are placed across the full width; these are provided with a rounded-arch frame in natural stone blocks. The arches are provided with a keystone. Above the doors are three rectangular windows; these have a cross-shaped division and are provided with glazing bars. In the top gable of the risalite there is an oval-shaped window. The adjoining walls of the central section are also bordered on the outside with blocks of natural stone, partly in bond, partly by means of isolated blocks. In the lower and upper facade, three- and five-part horizontally placed window strips are fitted, provided with glazing bars. All mentioned windows are surrounded or articulated with the same natural stone. The hall section behind rises behind the entrance facade and is crowned in the visible facade part, in the middle, by a segmental arch. The stage tower is topped with a mansard roof.

In the right-hand side facade in total 12 narrow tall rectangular leaded glass windows.

Of the INTERIOR the following is notable among other things. In the entrance section small stairwells with panelling of blue/green glazed tiles and stair railing with wooden handrail. The hall section opens itself rounding and sloping away from the entrance towards the stage. On the entrance side there is a slightly projecting balcony with balustrade. The orchestra pit is situated in front of the stage opening. On either side of the stage space there is a small honour loge. To the left of the stage space there is adjoining a dressing and costume room, with on the upper floor a store for stage clothing. On the right-hand side there is the storage for the wings and properties. The space under the stage floor also serves as storage space.

Jos Cuypers, due to the ornamentation and the special coherence between exterior and interior. The Aula Maior possesses ensemble value as an essential component of the former monastery complex Rolduc which is of cultural-historical and architectural-historical national importance and is of special significance for the appearance of Kerkrade. The Aula Maior is of general importance due to the architectural integrity of exterior and interior and the architectural-historical and functional rarity.
