Omschrijving
- wegens de gaaf bewaarde infrastructuur daterend uit de tijd van de abdij (1129-1566);
- wegens de kleinschalige aanleg in landschapsstijl in de directe omgeving van het huis bestaande uit een parkbos met slingerlanen en een vijverpartij voor het huis;
- wegens het gaaf bewaarde moestuinensemble;
- wegens de visueel-landschappelijke relatie tussen de buitenplaats en het klooster- annex heerlijkheid;

Description
Description component 2: HISTORICAL GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT belonging to the country estate Mariënwaerdt.
The country estate has medieval origins as an abbey of which the land division and lane system (infrastructure) remains, connecting the various farms belonging to the abbey. On a map from circa 1624, present in the house, this lane pattern is indicated. The core of the 18th-century country estate is formed by a semicircular terrain located between the Kloostersteeg and the bend of the Linge with centrally the main building, to the northeast thereof the park woodland and an orchard and to the southwest utility gardens (vegetable garden, orchard) and farms. Perpendicular to the Kloostersteeg stands the entrance lane (Biersteeg which continues into the Notenlaan), which in 1928 was planted with a double row of walnut trees, flanked by pastures with hedge rows. The main building lies beside this axis with its front facing north towards the pastures the Grote Vierkant and the Kleine Vierkant. In front of the building lies an elongated pond, possibly originally a remnant of the former moat of the abbey, which has been excavated with sloping banks in landscape style. From the main building runs a clear view over the lawn with coulisses (chestnut, copper beech and a coniferous group), over the pond towards the pastures. On the opposite side of the moat lies a slightly elevated pasture where presumably a chapel stood. To the northeast of the house lies a walking park with a curved lane pattern with tree-lined lanes. On the Topographic Military Map from circa 1850 a lane is indicated in the park woodland, which still exists today; a goose path connects the layout by the house with the park woodland. Behind the house lies the walled vegetable garden with rectangular path pattern, along which fruit trees stand.
The complex is bounded on the south side by the Appeldijk, planted with apple and pear trees, which runs along the Linge. Near the dike lies a medieval refuge mound of medieval origin, where people and animals could take shelter at high water. The eastern boundary coincides with that of the old monastery grounds, later lordship: the Bisschopsgraaf. The railway line forms the northern boundary.
Valuation
The HISTORICAL GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT belonging to the country estate Mariënwaerdt is of general cultural and garden-historical importance:
- because of the well-preserved infrastructure dating from the time of the abbey (1129-1566);
- because of the small-scale design in landscape style in the immediate vicinity of the house consisting of a park woodland with winding lanes and a pond feature in front of the house;
- because of the well-preserved vegetable garden ensemble;
- because of the visual-landscape relationship between the country estate and the monastery annex lordship;
- because of the functional-spatial coherence with the other components of the country estate.
