Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
Located amid a surrounding garden between Zonnelaan and Zuider Buiten Spaarne, a VILLA named: "de Waterlelie", built in 1917-1918 after a design by J.B. van Loghem on behalf of M.G. Jonker. The building style shows influence of expressionist German villa architecture from the early 20th century. Van Loghem enlarged the property in 1921 with a garage and remodelled the living room in 1929. The leaded glass was made by Bogtman in Haarlem.
Description
Villa built on a rectangular ground plan, consisting of basement, ground floor, first floor and attic storey. The building is constructed of brickwork which is entirely rendered with a rough render, known in the construction period as "terra nova" stucco. Below the gutterlines there are striking series of diagonal consoles executed in concrete. The roof is a complex hipped roof covered with black Dutch tiles. Each roof plane has a dormer window. The ridgeline of the main roof runs parallel to Zonnelaan.
The rectangular main form of the house consists of a long front and rear side, respectively parallel to Zonnelaan (W) and to Zuider-Buiten Spaarne (E) and of two shorter sides to the north and south. The living rooms are located on the east and south sides. The entrance and service rooms on the north and west sides.
The front (W) is symmetrical and has in the centre a three-sided projection from ground level to gutterline. The projection is executed in ornamental concrete. Above the gutterline there is a dormer window kept within the facade plane in "terra nova" stucco which, above the gutterline also carried here by the striking consoles, is closed off by a transverse roof. The dormer window has on the front a horizontal four-part window with leaded glass. The projection has on the ground floor three-sided terminated openings which in the wide central bay are double in size. On the ground floor the projection forms a porch which is reached by several steps. Behind this is the main entrance section kept within the facade plane which consists of a three-part frame with central panelled door flanked by leaded glass. On the first floor the projection has vertical windows, of which two in the wide central bay are placed next to each other. These windows illuminate the staircase and are fitted with coloured leaded glass, depicting the four seasons. The central projection is flanked on the ground floor by three small, high-placed square windows and on the first floor by two-pane windows placed in the centre of the facade plane. All these windows in the front facade have leaded glass. Against the south side stands a single-storey projection with on the street side (W) a five-part window series. The other sides of the house have an asymmetrical layout with multi-pane windows in which predominantly clear glass is placed. The south-east corner has on the ground floor a terrace kept within the building volume and on the first floor a loggia. The south-east side connects via a large terrace to the Zuider Buiten Spaarne.
The garden has on the Zonnelaan side two gate piers consisting of brickwork and natural stone capping plates which on the street side are provided with a sculpture and the name of the villa.
Valuation
Villa of general significance from an architectural-historical and cultural-historical perspective, because of the architectural design, detailing and material use and as an example of early 20th-century housing construction for the wealthy. The villa is furthermore of significance because of its location between Zonnelaan and Zuider Buiten Spaarne and as an exceptionally rare component within the oeuvre of J.B. van Loghem.
