Inleiding
Temidden van rondomgaande tuin gelegen VILLA genaamd: "'T ZONNEHUIS", in de jaren 1919-1920 in een zakelijk-expressionistische trant gebouwd naar ontwerp van J.B. van Loghem. Opdrachtgever was K.C.A. Valken.
Omschrijving
Op overwegend vierkant grondplan gebouwde villa met in-en uitspringende volumes bestaande uit twee bouwlagen onder plat dak. Het blokvormige bouwvolume is wat betreft de parterre, de noordgevel en de schoorsteenpartij in de oostgevel opgetrokken in gele baksteen waarin ter verlevendiging misbaksels zijn verwerkt. De uitkragende onderdelen van de verdieping zijn uitgevoerd in gerabat donker beschot. Tussen de omgaande gootlijst en de vensters van de verdieping bevindt zich een strook van gepotdekseld donker beschot. De verdieping heeft een houtskelet waarvan de witgeverfde liggers onder de overkragende verdiepingsvloer in het zicht zijn gelaten.
De zuid- en oostgevel zijn grotendeels symmetrisch van opzet en gericht op zon en uitzicht over het Spaarne. De zuidgevel heeft op de parterre een centrale, door tuindeuren geflankeerde erker die in diepte overeenkomt met de overkraging van de verdieping. De verdieping heeft boven de erker een breed venster. Van de opengelaten, als loggia's behandelde hoeken is de zuidoostelijke opening later door een over de hoek geplaatst venster vervangen. De loggia in de zuidwestelijke hoek is nog intact. De oostgevel wordt verticaal geleed door een uitgemetselde schoorsteenpartij waarin op vensterhoogte van de parterre een rechthoekige gevelsteen met sculptuur is aangebracht. De in het vlak gehouden sculptuur geeft binnen een kader van drie driehoeken de voorstelling van een centrale zon met stralen waaraan een moeder met kind en een vader zich warmen en waaronder in gestileerde letters 'T ZONNEHUIS staat. De noordgevel is asymmetrisch door de ten dele uitkragende verdieping in hout en het resterende geveldeel dat tot aan de gepotdekselde rand in baksteen is uitgevoerd. Dit laatste geldt ook voor de westgevel. Het asymmetrische karakter van beide vensters wordt versterkt door de onregelmatige plaatsing van de vensters. De hoofdingang bevindt zich in de noordgevel onder de uitkragende verdieping. De deur van de hoofdingang is samengesteld uit horizontale delen. De vensters hebben aan de oost- en westzijde houten luiken. De ramen hebben vrijwel alle glas-in-lood.
Net als het exterieur is ook het interieur grotendeels in oorspronkelijke staat. De plattegrond kenmerkt zich door een centraal trappenhuis waaromheen alle vertrekken zijn gegroepeerd. De woonvertrekken zijn voornamelijk op het zuiden gericht.
Waardering
Zowel uit- als inwendig merendeels gaaf bewaarde villa van algemeen belang vanuit architectuurhistorisch en cultuurhistorisch oogpunt, vanwege de architectonische vormgeving, de detaillering en het materiaalgebruik en als voorbeeld van vroeg 20ste-eeuwse woningbouw voor welgestelden. De villa 't Zonnehuis is voorts van belang als karakteristiek onderdeel binnen het vroege oeuvre van J.B. van Loghem.

Villa built on a predominantly square ground plan with projecting and recessed volumes consisting of two storeys under a flat roof. The cubic building volume is, as regards the ground floor, the north facade and the chimney structure in the east facade, constructed in yellow brick in which misfired bricks have been incorporated for visual interest. The projecting components of the upper storey are executed in roughly finished dark weatherboarding. Between the surrounding gutter line and the windows of the upper storey is a strip of tar-paper-covered dark weatherboarding. The upper storey has a timber frame of which the white-painted beams beneath the overhanging upper storey floor are left visible.
The south and east facades are largely symmetrical in layout and oriented towards the sun and views over the Spaarne. The south facade has on the ground floor a central oriel bay flanked by garden doors corresponding in depth to the overhang of the upper storey. The upper storey has a broad window above the oriel bay. One of the open-sided angles treated as loggias, the south-eastern opening, was later replaced by a window placed across the corner. The loggia in the south-western corner remains intact. The east facade is vertically articulated by a masoned chimney structure in which at window height of the ground floor a rectangular carved stone panel is placed. The low-relief sculpture shows within a frame of three triangles the representation of a central sun with rays towards which a mother with child and a father warm themselves and below which in stylized letters reads 'T ZONNEHUIS. The north facade is asymmetrical due to the partially overhanging upper storey in timber and the remaining facade section which is executed in brick up to the tar-paper-covered edge. The same applies to the west facade. The asymmetrical character of both windows is reinforced by the irregular placement of the windows. The main entrance is located in the north facade beneath the overhanging upper storey. The door of the main entrance is composed of horizontal sections. The windows have wooden shutters on the east and west sides. The frames have leaded glass in virtually all windows.
Like the exterior, the interior is also largely preserved in its original condition. The ground plan is characterized by a central staircase around which all rooms are grouped. The living spaces are oriented mainly to the south.
Valuation
Villa preserved largely intact both externally and internally, of general importance from an architectural-historical and cultural-historical perspective, owing to the architectural design, the detailing and material use and as an example of early 20th-century housing for the well-to-do. The villa 't Zonnehuis is furthermore of importance as a characteristic part of the early oeuvre of J.B. van Loghem.
