Inleiding

Introduction

VILLA, named "De Steenhaag", situated amid surrounding garden between Zonnelaan and Zuider Buiten Spaarne, in its main form inspired by native rural traditions and in execution by rational Berlagian brick architecture. The villa was built in 1912 according to a design by architect J.B. van Loghem. Van Loghem, who built this residence with an architectural office/office space for his own use, added a small extension with a tower to it in 1917. The current roof covering with green-glazed tiles replaced the original red tile covering.

Description

Villa built on an asymmetrical floor plan with a tower built on a rectangular floor plan, consisting of one storey and attic storey under mutually intersecting pantile-covered gabled roofs with partly unequal ridge line heights; the tower has three storeys under a steep hipped roof with copper covering. The roof foot of the tower is located at the height of the ridge line of the main roof. The design consists of an L-shaped main volume with the inner corner situated in the southwest. On the street side (W) is a projecting section containing the main entrance. The ridge line of the roof above this extension is lower than that of the main roof. The extension with the tower stands on the river side against the north-eastern corner of the main volume. The masonry is constructed of yellow-red brick, the entrance section is executed in natural stone and contains a step counting three treads. The predominantly multi-pane wooden frames are fitted with shutters on the ground floor, all windows contain clear leaded glass. Above the natural stone surround of the main entrance is an oriel. The three-part frame of the entrance section contains a rebated door in the middle (installed in 1928 to replace the original double entrance). In the gable tops, three narrow vertical wall openings are each spared, the individual light slit in the gable top on the street side forms an exception to this. The tower has on the second storey a loggia behind a natural stone column which supports a small arcade. The ridge line is interrupted at two points by a chimney. The roof corners of the tower roof are emphasized with small pointed finials. The front garden is separated from the public road by means of a low stone wall belonging to the design with a double-hinged wooden garden gate.

Valuation

Villa De Steenhaag is of general importance from an architectural-historical perspective and cultural-historical perspective as a largely well-preserved example of early 20th-century housing for the wealthy. The work is furthermore of importance as the first office villa built for his own family and architectural office, as a characteristic component within the oeuvre of J.B. van Loghem.
