Inleiding

Introduction

COSTER'S DWELLING located on the west side of Wilhelminastraat. The building, called Remonstrantenhuis, forms part of the facade wall between Prins Hendrikstraat (north) and Mauritsstraat (south) and borders the Remonstrantse kerk to the north and the residential block Wilhelminastraat 24 to 28 to the south.

The building, constructed in neorenaissance style, was built in 1887 as a dwelling house after a design by A. van der Steur jr. and was taken into use in 1923 as a coster's dwelling, which was also used for various activities by the Remonstrantse gemeente Haarlem. The coster's dwelling belongs to the Remonstrantse kerk built in 1886 after a design by J.A.G. van der Steur and forms part of the formal urban planning scheme of Wilhelminastraat and its immediate surroundings. Wilhelminastraat was laid out in 1881 as the main axis of a western urban expansion that took place on the site of the filled-in former city rampart. This urban expansion is characterised by a regular and strict street pattern, in which individually designed residential blocks and dwelling houses form an architectural unity. In particular along Wilhelminastraat and Mauritsstraat, the facade walls built up from various residential blocks and dwelling houses stand out due to their urban planning unity and architecture. The residential development along Wilhelminastraat is interspersed with the Remonstrantse kerk and two schools, which likewise fit into the urban planning scheme of the street.

Description

Coster's dwelling on an almost square ground plan. The coster's dwelling, constructed in brick on a natural stone plinth, is built up from a ground storey, first storey and attic storey and is covered by a truncated hipped roof clad with grey interlocking tiles. The front facade of the coster's dwelling is in total five window bays wide, with the middle window bay projecting. The outer corners of the front facade are vertically accentuated by pilasters of natural stone blocks. The facade is horizontally articulated between the ground storey and first storey by a natural stone string course. At the top the front facade is finished with a wooden cornice with frieze. This frieze is worked with triglyphs and metopes at the height of the projecting middle window bay. This projecting middle window bay comprises the entrance section, which consists of a somewhat recessed wooden door with cast-iron decorative grille which is accessible by means of a three-step natural stone staircase. The entrance is framed by a natural stone pilaster arrangement with entablature. In the frieze of the entablature is the text: "REMONSTRANTENHUIS". Above it is a stone decorated with scrollwork, pilasters and ornamental brackets into which the portrait of a man (presumably Paschier de Fijne) is set. These are additions from 1928. The central projection is finished above the cornice by a roof gable with natural stone pilasters and ornamental brackets with volutes on either side. The roof gable is finished by a pediment. The window on the first storey of the central projection is finished by a natural stone projecting lintel with consoles. The wooden sash windows on the ground storey likewise have a natural stone lintel and are finished by a semicircular spandrel filled with a mosaic of yellow and red brick. The relieving arches of the semicircular spandrels have a natural stone lion's head as the keystone and rest on natural stone consoles. The windows on the first storey are double casement wooden windows with a divided fanlight and are finished by a natural stone lintel and a rooster comb of brick and natural stone. The roof gable has a double casement wooden window.

Valuation

Well-preserved coster's dwelling in neorenaissence style, of general importance due to architectural-historical value and urban planning and ensemble value as a characteristic component of the 19th-century formal urban expansion around Wilhelminastraat; the building is a defining element in the western facade wall of Wilhelminastraat which appears as an architectural unity. Furthermore, the object is of importance due to its function as coster's dwelling belonging to the adjacent Remonstrantse kerk and of importance within the oeuvre of architect A. van der Steur jr.
