Inleiding
Aan de noordzijde van de Mauritsstraat, tussen de Oranjekade (west) en Wilhelminastraat (oost), gelegen WOONBLOK.
Het in neo-Renaissance stijl opgetrokken woonblok omvat in opzet zes woningen en werd in 1886 gebouwd door de aannemer J. Verkoren uit Voorschoten. Het woonblok maakt onderdeel uit van het formele stedebouwkundige plan van de Wilhelminastraat en haar directe omgeving. De Wilhelminastraat werd in 1881 aangelegd als hoofdas van een westelijke stadsuitbreiding die plaats vond op de plek van de gedempte voormalige stadssingel. Deze stadsuitbreiding kenmerkt zich door een regelmatig en strak stratenpatroon, waarbij de individueel ontworpen woonblokken en woonhuizen een architectonische eenheid vormen. Met name langs de Wilhelminastraat en Mauritsstraat zijn de uit verschillende woonblokken en woonhuizen opgetrokken straatwanden opvallend door hun stedebouwkundige eenheid en architectuur.
Omschrijving
In opzet uit zes woningen bestaand woonblok op rechthoekige plattegrond. Het woonblok, dat is opgetrokken in baksteen op een natuurstenen plint, is opgebouwd uit een kelderverdieping, begane grond, verdieping, mezzanino en kapverdieping. Het gehele woonblok wordt gedekt door een doorlopend afgeknot schilddak bekleed met grijze Hollandse pannen en mastiek.
De voorgevel van het woonblok bestaat uit een risalerend middengedeelte van zes vensterassen breedte met ter weerszijden daarvan zijvleugels. Deze zijvleugels zijn vrijwel identiek aan elkaar met die uitzondering dat de linker zijvleugel zes in plaats van vijf vensterassen breed is. Op de hoek met de zijgevels bevindt zich in de zijvleugels een afgeschuinde vensteras. De zijgevels zijn ieder drie vensterassen breed. Van het zes vensterassen brede risalerende middengedeelte zijn de twee middelste vensterassen eveneens risalerend. In deze middenrisaliet bevinden zich twee entree's in oorsprong bestaande uit enigszins verdiept gelegen houten paneeldeuren met een natuurstenen stoep. Deze middenrisaliet wordt boven de kroonlijst afgesloten door een opengewerkt gebogen fronton. Centraal in dit fronton is een obelisk op voetstuk geplaatst. In de zijvleugels zijn de middelste twee vensterassen, alwaar zich de entree's bevinden, eveneens risalerend. Deze risalieten worden boven de kroonlijst afgesloten door een fronton. Ook de afgeschuinde hoekvensterassen en de meest noordelijke vensteras van de zijgevels zijn risalerend.
De voor- en zijgevels van het woonblok zijn versierd met gepleisterde detailleringen zoals doorlopende sierbanden, die ter hoogte van de risalerende geveldelen overgaan in geprofileerde kroonlijsten met friezen. Boven langs de gevel loopt onder de houten kroonlijst een breed fries dat ter hoogte van de risalerende geveldelen versierd is met metopen en triglyfen met guttae. De risalerende geveldelen worden geaccentueerd door bakstenen penanten die ter hoogte van de bel-etage en verdieping met speklagen zijn versierd. Van onder naar boven verjongen deze penanten zich. Ter hoogte van de verdieping worden de vensters in de risalerende geveldelen afgesloten door een boogveld met siermetselwerk. A residential block comprising six dwellings in plan on a rectangular footprint. The residential block, constructed in brick on a natural stone plinth, is built up with a basement storey, ground floor, first floor, mezzanine and attic storey. The entire residential block is covered by a continuous truncated hipped roof clad with grey Dutch tiles and mastic.
The front facade of the residential block consists of a projecting central section six window bays wide with side wings on either side.
