Inleiding

Introduction

On the west side of the Wilhelminastraat, between the Mauritsstraat (north) and Alexanderstraat (south), located RESIDENTIAL BLOCK.

The residential block, erected in a mixture of Eclecticism and neo-Renaissance style, comprises ten dwellings and was built in 1885 according to a design by A. van der Steur jr. The residential block forms part of the formal urban planning scheme of the Wilhelminastraat and its immediate surroundings. The Wilhelminastraat was laid out in 1881 as the main axis of a western urban expansion which took place on the site of the filled-in former city rampart. This urban expansion is characterized by a regular and orderly street pattern, whereby the individually designed residential blocks and dwellings form an architectural unity. In particular along the Wilhelminastraat and Mauritsstraat, the street facades formed from various residential blocks and dwellings are striking in their urban planning unity and architecture. The residential development along the Wilhelminastraat is interspersed with a church and two schools, which likewise fit into the urban planning scheme of the street.

Description

Residential block consisting of ten townhouses on a rectangular ground plan. The residential block consists of two different housing types arranged in the scheme A-A-B-B-A-A-B-B-A-A. The residential block is built in brick on a natural stone plinth and is entirely covered by a continuous truncated hipped roof clad with grey Dutch tiles and mastic.

Housing type A is composed of a basement storey, ground floor, first storey, mezzanine and attic storey. The dwellings are each four window bays wide. The outermost window bays of the two corner dwellings are chamfered. These chamfered window bays are, like the corners of the buildings and the somewhat projecting window bays in which the entrance is located, provided with pilaster arrangements. On the piano nobile these pilaster arrangements are of a Doric order and provided with banding. On the first storey the pilasters have an Ionic capital. The front facades are furthermore decorated amongst others with plastered string courses between the different storeys. At the height of the mezzanine the facade is richly worked with plastered detailing, such as amongst others the fantasy pilasters which are located between the windows. The projecting window bay in which the entrance is located is closed above the eaves line by a broken pediment and roof dormer. The roof dormer, which is provided on either side with claw stones, is likewise closed by a broken half-round pediment. The entrance itself consists of a wooden door with cast-iron decorative grille and is accessible by means of a natural stone flight of three steps. The door is framed by a Doric pilaster arrangement and closed by a pediment. The fanlight of the entrance is closed by a cornice. The windows of housing type A are on the piano nobile and first storey all sash windows. On the first storey the windows originally all have a T-crossbar and divided fanlight. The windows all have plastered voussoirs with a diamond-shaped decoration. At the windows on the first storey there is in the spandrel above the windows a decoration of coloured brick. The window on the first storey in the projecting window bay has a shell motif as decoration in the spandrel. The windows at the height of the mezzanine consist of, per window bay, two narrow half-round ended windows.

Housing type B is composed of a ground floor, first storey, second storey and attic storey. These dwellings are all three window bays wide. The front facades are decorated with plastered string courses between the storeys. In particular the somewhat recessed window bays in which the entrances are located (alternating at the extreme left or extreme right) are richly worked with plasterwork. Thus the wooden front door with cast-iron decorative grille is framed by a rustic-like plastered pilaster arrangement with pediment. The window on the first storey above the front door is framed by plastered half-columns and closed by a head-piece. The window on the second storey of this window bay is framed by two Doric brick pilasters and possesses a window sill supported by worked consoles. The slightly recessed window bays are closed above the profiled cornice by a roof dormer with claw stones on either side thereof and a pediment. Below the pediment runs a frieze with triglyphs and metopes. The windows in the front facade of housing type B are, with the exception of the ground floor, all sash windows. On the second storey the sash windows originally all have a T-crossbar and divided fanlight. The windows on the ground floor are double opening wooden windows. The frames on the first storey have a brick mosaic as spandrel filling and have a voussoir in the form of a lion's head. The windows on the second storey have some plastered voussoirs in the arch and a voussoir in the form of a console which supports the wooden eaves line.

Both side facades of the residential block have no windows or doors and also no plastered decorative details. The rear facade of the residential block is simpler in execution and decoration than the front facade and originally possesses wooden six-pane sash windows or T-sash windows on the storeys and wooden opening garden doors and kitchen doors at the height of the piano nobile or ground floor. The garden doors on the piano nobile were originally accessible by means of double wooden flights of steps with covered verandas.

Valuation

Largely well-preserved residential block with townhouses from 1885 in a combination of Eclecticism and neo-Renaissance style, of general importance due to its architectural historical value and its urban planning and ensemble value as a characteristic component of the 19th-century formal urban expansion around the Wilhelminastraat; the residential block is a defining visual element in the western facade of the Wilhelminastraat, which appears architecturally as a unified whole. Furthermore, the residential block is of cultural historical importance as an element in the history of housing for the wealthy and of importance within the oeuvre of architect A. van der Steur jr.
