Inleiding
Voormalige HOEFSMEDERIJ, gebouwd in 1883-1884 als onderdeel van de cavaleriekazerne en gelegen ten noordwesten van het hoofdgebouw van de Ripperdakazerne in sober eclecische trant naar ontwerp van F.R. van Roijen.
Omschrijving
De hoefsmederij staat op rechthoekig (nagenoeg vierkant) grondplan en heeft een hoogte van één bouwlaag met kapverdieping onder zadeldak met zwarte kruispan en rondom geprofileerde daklijsten. Centraal in de nok bevindt zich een samengestelde schoorsteen van groot formaat. Het muurwerk is opgetrokken in rode baksteen boven hardstenen plint. De onderdorpels van de vensters zijn eveneens in hardsteen. De ontlastingsbogen in de voorgevel (O) zijn aan de bases en in de sluitsteen uitgevoerd in een zandsteen. De voorgevel heeft op de hoeken en onder de gootlijst uitgemetseld muurwerk dat onder de geveltop is gedecoreerd met een hoefijzer in zandsteen. Op de parterre bevinden zich elk twee gekoppelde vensters aan weerszijden van een later toegevoegde kleine vierkante uitbouw met ingang. Boven deze uitbouw is een gekoppeld venster van kleiner formaat ter verlichting van de kapverdieping. De koppeling bestaat steeds uit éénsteens muurdammen. De identieke zijgevels (Z en N) hebben een centrale deur met twee flankerende vensters. De achtergevel (W) is blind. Alle vensteropeningen en de deuropeningen in de zijgevel zijn rondboogvormig en voorzien van een bewerkte sluitsteen in zandsteen. De vensters hebben alle houten ramen. Op de parterre zijn dit zesruits ramen beneden en halfronde ramen met bladvormige roedenverdeling in de boog daarboven. De gekoppelde vensters in de geveltop hebben bovenaan elk een cirkel boven twee halve bogen.
Waardering
De voormalige hoefsmederij uit 1884 behorende bij de Ripperdakazerne is van algemeen belang vanwege de cultuurhistorische en architectuurhistorische betekenis en ensemblewaarde als overwegend gaaf bewaard historisch-functioneel onderdeel van het voormalige kazernecomplex.

Description
The horseshoe smithy stands on a rectangular (nearly square) ground plan and has a height of one storey with roof space storey under a gabled roof with black roof tiles and profiled eaves cornices all around. Centrally in the ridge is a composite chimney of large size. The masonry is built in red brick above hardstone plinth. The undersills of the windows are likewise in hardstone. The relieving arches in the front facade (E) are at the bases and in the keystone executed in sandstone. The front facade has at the corners and below the eaves cornice raised masonry that below the gable top is decorated with a horseshoe in sandstone. On the ground floor are located each two coupled windows on either side of a later added small square extension with entrance. Above this extension is a coupled window of smaller size for lighting the roof space storey. The coupling consists always of one-brick-thick masonry piers. The identical side facades (S and N) have a central door with two flanking windows. The rear facade (W) is blind. All window openings and the door openings in the side facade are arch-shaped and provided with a worked keystone in sandstone. The windows all have wooden frames. On the ground floor these are six-pane frames below and half-round frames with leafy glazing bars in the arch above. The coupled windows in the gable top have each a circle above two half arches at the top.

The former horseshoe smithy from 1884 belonging to the Ripperdakazerne is of general interest by reason of the cultural-historical and architectural-historical significance and ensemble value as a predominantly well-preserved historical-functional component of the former barracks complex.
