Inleiding
Meest westelijk blok van een groep van vijf blokken voormalige DIENSTWONINGEN, voor gehuwde militairen, gebouwd in 1883-1884 en bestaande uit twee paar dwars ten opzichte van de Saenredamstraat staande woningblokken op geruime afstand aan weerszijden van een dubbele woning evenwijdig aan deze straat, uitgevoerd naar ontwerp van I.J.H. Gijsberti Hodenpijl in sobere eclectische trant en in oorsprong behorende bij de Ripperdakazerne.
Omschrijving
Op rechthoekig grondplan gebouwd blok van vijf woningen, bestaande uit parterre en kapverdieping onder zadeldak met rode Hollandse pan. In de nok bevinden zich vier schoorstenen. Het blok bevat in de lengte tien vensterassen en in de breedte (kopgevels) twee vensterassen. Elke woning heeft een breedte van twee vensterassen. Het muurwerk is opgetrokken in rode baksteen. De gebosseerde en licht uitgemetselde hoeken zijn gemetseld in gele baksteen. Het muurwerk is verder gedecoreerd met cordonlijsten tussen parterre en kapverdieping en horizontale lijsten in de toppen van de kopgevels. Dit lijstwerk is steeds gepleisterd. Ook de decoratie van de ontlastingsbogen is gepleisterd. De overgang tussen muurwerk en kap wordt aan alle lange gevels gevormd door een houten kroonlijst. Aan de kopgevels rusten de licht overstekende dakschilden op doorgetrokken vlieringhouten. De dakschilden worden door gladde windveren beëindigd. De venster bevatten nog te dele houten schuiframen. De oorspronkelijk roedenverdeling van de ramen is soms nog aanwezig in de bovenlichten. De schuiframen hebben nog deels de oorspronkelijke negenruitsverdeling.

Most westerly block of a group of five blocks of former SERVICE DWELLINGS, for married military personnel, built in 1883-1884 and consisting of two pairs of housing blocks positioned transversely to the Saenredamstraat at considerable distance on either side of a double dwelling parallel to this street, executed after a design by I.J.H. Gijsberti Hodenpijl in sober eclectic style and originally belonging to the Ripperdakazerne.
Description
Block of five dwellings built on a rectangular ground plan, consisting of ground floor and attic storey under a gabled roof with red Dutch tiles. In the ridge there are four chimneys. The block contains in length ten window bays and in width (end gables) two window bays. Each dwelling has a width of two window bays. The masonry is built in red brick. The bossed and lightly raked corners are laid in yellow brick. The masonry is further decorated with cordon mouldings between ground floor and attic storey and horizontal mouldings in the tops of the end gables. This moulding work is always rendered. The decoration of the relieving arches is also rendered. The transition between masonry and roof is formed on all long facades by a wooden cornice. At the end gables the slightly projecting roof tiles rest on extended loft timbers. The roof tiles are finished with smooth wind braces. The windows still partly contain wooden sash frames. The original glazing bars of the window frames are sometimes still present in the fanlights. The sash frames still partly have the original nine-pane division.
Valuation
The former block of service dwellings from 1883-84 is together with the four other blocks of service dwellings on the Saenredamstraat of general importance from a cultural-historical and architectural-historical perspective and by reason of ensemble value as a historical-functional component of the former barracks complex of the Ripperdakazerne.
