Omschrijving
Inleiding
Aannemer was A. Rinkema uit Haarlem.

Description
Introduction
Public MAUSOLEUM situated on the northern edge of the cemetery in neoclassical style, built in 1893 to a design by the then Haarlem municipal architect J. Leijh, who signed the building in the basement to the left of the entrance. The contractor was A. Rinkema from Haarlem.
By being placed on a base, this building, with its front (south) facing the cemetery, is elevated above the surroundings. Within this it also fulfills a decorative function.
In 1925 the central volume was fitted out as an assembly hall. After 1960 the ceiling of the assembly hall was lowered and the portico provided with a glazed enclosure with a dark horizontal band in its upper edge.
Description
The symmetrical building stands on a rectangular ground plan and consists of three parts: a central and projecting volume with a gently sloping transverse roof, flanked by lower side wings with gently sloping longitudinal roofs. The central volume has a Doric temple front with two fluted columns between antae. In the tympanum is a sculpture by sculptor J.P. Maas depicting the three Fates with the thread of life from Greek mythology. The side wings consist of colonnades of Ionic columns and half-columns.
The central volume is accessed (via the glazed wall) through a tall double centrally placed paneled door in the rear wall of the columned portico which was originally dark-colored. The bays of the colonnades in the side wings, likewise originally dark-colored, are blind. The columned portico and colonnades are connected to each other via a monumental passage in the partition wall. In the side wings and in the cellars below them, along either side of a central corridor, are original wall graves which are respectively supplied with daylight via roof lights and glass in the corridor floor. Graves are also found in the floor of the colonnades of the side wings. The side facades of the building contain two large framed four-pane windows, the southern examples of which are blind. The gently sloping roof tops are decorated with a circle between two triangles. Half below ground level are entrances to the cellars in the side facades, accessed via a sloping ramp. The entirely blind rear side of the building lies on the boundary of the cemetery and is only visible from the private back gardens of the houses on the south side of the Pijnboomstraat.
The basement, the columns and a number of architectural details are executed in sandstone. Friezes and moulding are of wood. The remaining brickwork consists of plastered brick with the motif of blocks of natural stone in the side facades. The part of the side facades below the height of the basement is painted black.
Valuation
As a readily recognizable example of a public wall-grave mausoleum of general importance by reason of cultural-historical and architectural-historical value, also of importance as a functional and prominently situated component of the complex of the Algemene Begraafplaats Kleverlaan.
