Inleiding

Introduction

The large RESIDENTIAL HOUSE is located on a spacious, partially raised plot with border planting. The principal form of the building is complex due to the composition of building volumes which give the building in its total appearance a rather massive but playful aspect. The residential house was designed on commission of the merchant N. Zwart and was realized in 1917/1918. The residential house is built in the Renewal style. The designer is not known, but this person almost certainly also designed the director's house of the dairy factory at the Bergumerdam 26 in Burgum, which is virtually identical. In popular speech the residential house was given the nickname 'plum villa' because in the residential house for the first time in Gorredijk an indoor water closet was installed. The building was internally renovated in 1980 according to a plan by the architect B. Adema from Dokkum. Behind the house a building block with a few garage boxes was built in 1964 which falls outside the scope of national protection.

Description

The residential house has an irregular complicated floor plan and the elevation is also complexly composed. The building height rises, as it were: the left part of the front section consists of one storey, the right part of two storeys and the rear part of the residential house is three storeys high. The form of the roof, given the constituent building components, is also irregular and composite with respectively a 'partial roof', a half-hipped roof and an irregular hipped roof on which a section with flat roof. The roof tiles are covered with reddish-brown Tuile du Nord tiles; on the four roof sections ceramic, dome-shaped roof finials. In the north-western, south-western and south-eastern roof sections dormers. The gutter line has simple moulding and rests on corbels. The facades are constructed in dark brown bricks with cavity on a lime mortar of combed brown bricks closed off by a course of bricks. From the top edge of the window frames the facade is plastered, with the exception of the bed joints above the light openings and on either side of the balcony doors. In the centre of the north-eastern building volume is the entrance section: a two-step brick stoop with a landing under a wooden canopy with wooden posts on a natural stone capping of the mortared balustrade of the stoop; an original wooden door with side lights. Above the canopy a large fanlight with coloured leaded glass. In the side facades of the projecting building volume in the first and second storey leaded glass windows. The third storey is blank. The left part of the north-western facade was formerly an office section: in the facades an H- and cross window with leaded glass fanlights. The projecting, right part has a three-sided bay window with H-windows with leaded glass in the fanlight. On the bay window a balcony with wooden balustrade; the double balcony door with side lights and fanlights is decorated by a mortared 'stepped' frame. In the south-western facade on the front and rear side an H-window with leaded glass fanlight and awning window. Under the eave a new window. The rear facade has in the right half a pantry; in the left section garden doors with a terrace and on the second storey a three-light window and balcony doors, which provide access to the roof terrace on the kitchen. The facade wall has stepped plastering.

The interior is structurally reasonably original and contains original interior components, including a granito floor in the hallway, the original doors and a wooden kitchen cupboard.
