Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The general CEMETERY was laid out in 1926 according to a layout plan by municipal architect C. van Wamel from 1925; the original drawings for the layout presumably show two variants for planting, which has largely been renewed in the meantime. The burial ground was raised with the excavated soil from the pond and the surrounding ditch. To bridge the level difference between the path around the pond and the cemetery proper, a brick STAIRCASE in expressionist style was built. In 1942 the cemetery was enlarged at the rear by a third of its surface area, whereby the bell house came to be located in the middle rather than at the end of the cemetery. The plan for this extension was also by municipal architect Chr. van Wamel. The enlargement of the cemetery meant an extension with four plots; their size and arrangement follow closely with the existing layout. The extension was halted by order of the occupiers and only resumed in 1946 to be taken into use in 1947. The earliest burial in this part of the grounds dates from 1947. The grave monuments are of local-genealogical importance and are not protected by national heritage. The layout of the front garden is still recognizable, but the symmetry has been broken by the construction of a hall with columbarium. Despite changes in the planting and some paths, such a simple but well-balanced layout in Friesland is so rare that its protection is justified.
Description
The arrangement of the cemetery grounds is symmetrical in the length direction. The layout consists of the layout of a pleasure garden around an excavated pond and the original cemetery with eight plots; the path layout is surfaced with shells. To bridge the level difference between the path around the pond and the cemetery proper, a brick staircase was built with an outward-curling brick balustrade. Among the original planting are still some yew trees around the pond; the remaining planting is of more recent date: on either side of the entrance gate six chestnut trees, around the cemetery a beech hedge with oak trees. The oldest part of the cemetery consists of eight grass plots with graves; the new part consists of four plots with grave rows in the grass and narrow paths between them. At the boundary of the pleasure garden and the cemetery is a trimmed conifer hedge with a triangular cross-section. Along the paths of the new layout, which lead to the mortuary chapel, stand trimmed and untrimmed yew hedges and at the intersections conically trimmed conifers.
Valuation
The layout of the Municipal cemetery and staircase from 1926 and 1942/46 is of general cultural-historical and landscape value:
- for the reasonable degree of aesthetic quality of the design,
- for the reasonable degree of structural and visual integrity of the layout,
- for the high degree of aesthetic quality of the staircase,
- for the high degree of continuity in the style of layout,
- for the reasonable to high degree of integrity of the individual objects of the complex, which strengthens the ensemble value.
