Inleiding

120 cm.

Introduction

The former Public Elementary School in Gorredijk, now Regional Museum, is situated in the centre of the village close to a side arm of the Opsterlandse Compagnonsvaart. The building is positioned parallel and set back in relation to the road. Tall trees now stand in front of it, which was not the case around the turn of the century, as can be seen in an old photograph from circa 1900. At that time a tram ran through this street, past the school. The style in which the building is constructed is a mixture of "post office" and "station style", in which the masonry decoration makes use of Art Nouveau elements. The school was built in 1887: a stone tablet to the left of the entrance states: "The foundation stone laid by S.G. Zwart Alderman of the Municipality of Opsterland 1 September 1887". The building is also dated on the front facade, above the entrance. In August 1888 the school came into use. The Public Elementary School replaced an older school building from 1829: the old school building had become too small to accommodate the growing number of children and also the MULO classes. From 1955 date the building plans to construct a residence for the headmistress against the rear facade of the school. This plan was not realised. Moreover, this building had in the meantime become too small again and a new school was taken into use elsewhere. From 1955 to 1961 the old school functioned as a Public Reading Room; in 1961 the Regional Museum was housed in it. The old, now too small school from 1829 was demolished in 1887 and on 31 May of that year the public tender took place by the then mayor of the municipality of Opsterland for the construction of the Public Elementary School. The contractor was the lowest bidder Jan Lubberts Eppenga, carpenter in Lippenhuizen. The designer of the building was presumed to be architect Halbertsma, at that time municipal architect in the municipality of Opsterland. According to witnesses, the small extension built against the rear facade, to the left of the central section, was built after 1961: in the originally T-shaped floor plan the space to the left of the central leg of the T was filled in with a number of small rooms.

From 1991 dates the renovation of the interior, in which major changes took place. Only the central wooden double staircase remains original: of the interior only the staircase and the window frames are eligible for protection.

In 1983, two bell towers were placed on the square behind the regional museum, originating from the demolished Adelskerk in Beetsterzwaag.

Description

The floor plan of the building is T-shaped, except for the left side of the rear facade, where the extension has filled in the space between the T-legs. The school has two storeys, under two composite gabled roofs. On the roof lie black glazed corrugated Frisian tiles. On the angle stones of the gable ends and on the corners sit large cast-iron ornamental elements. Two small cupolas with pointed gables sit above the eaves line of the corner risalits. On the rear roof section stands a tall chimney and on the front roof section two small cupolas with cast-iron ornamental elements. The building is constructed in brown brick; for the decorative elements yellow bricks are used. The frieze and the cornice are decorated by recessed rectangular panels of tilework and coloured stones. In the gable end of the left side facade the original frieze and the ascending dentil course are still present; in the right side facade this is no longer the case: the frieze has disappeared, as has the round arch above the window. The front facade is symmetrically divided into a central risalit and two corner risalits, each with respectively five and six nine-pane windows with three-pane fanlights. The windows of the first storey are provided with round arch trimmings with mosaic tiling; the windows of the second storey with segmental arch trimmings with mosaic tiling. The tall door is situated in the central risalit: the woodcarving is painted and provided with cast-iron panels. The fanlight consists of a triplet window under a round arch. In the cornice in the central risalit stands ANNO REGIONAL MUSEUM 1887. Originally it read ANNO PUBLIC ELEMENTARY SCHOOL 1887. The rear facade consists of a central risalit and two corner risalits, of which the left one received an extension after 1955 that fills the corner up to half the height of the first storey. This extension is now in use as a meeting room. In the right corner risalit a door has been added. In the slightly projecting sections of the corner risalits are four small windows in the second storey; in the central risalit in the first and second storeys a total of six vertical hexagonal windows with three-pane fanlights; the recessed panels of the frieze are only present in the central risalit. At the top is a four-pane window with two-pane fanlight. The right side facade is no longer original (see above), the left one is: it is provided with a frieze with recessed panels above which is a two-pane window with round arch trimming with mosaic brickwork. The top of the side facade still has the original ascending dentil course. Still original in the interior are only the wooden frames of the windows, provided with carved work, and the centrally positioned double wooden staircase with cast-iron balusters.

Two bell towers in the square behind the museum: one by Herman, 1482, diam. 100 cm. and one by G. van Wou and J. Schonenborch, 1520, diam. 120 cm.
