Inleiding

Knoop,

- vanwege de typologische zeldzaamheid in Nederland.

Introduction

The SUNDIAL, dated 1750, is located in the sunken front courtyard of the former country house 'De Slotplaats'. It is partly a so-called polar sundial. The sundial was almost certainly made by or according to the instructions of J.H. Knoop, who around 1750 taught Jhr. Edzard van Burmania, son of the house, in mathematics and navigation. The time indicator was damaged in 1787 by gunfire. The current white painting conceals these damages. The garden ornament stands at the intersection of the centre lines drawn from the front door through the garden and between the two mortared stairs to the sunken section of the garden. The sundial has belonged to the place from time immemorial; although the garden ornament was once located in the back garden of a country estate by the road, the so-called Blauwhuis, which was demolished in 1837.

Description

The sandstone sundial consists of a constricted column, with acanthus leaf motif on the base and mirror planes, on which the actual sundial rests and has a sphere as its crown. The actual sundial apparently has a fanciful form. The stone ribs serve as styles, of which 22 can be counted; some small styles each shadow two dial plates. The numbering is in Arabic numerals; only the whole hours are indicated. There are flat, cylindrical and concave dial plates. On the cylinders on the east and west sides the tops have the shape of the winter arc and the bottoms that of the summer arc. On the east side a small sun is carved in relief.

Valuation

The sundial from 1750 is of general cultural-historical importance:

- because of the memory of the former country house on the site,

- because of the high degree of importance for the significance and work of the mathematician-gardener J.H. Knoop,

- because of the typological rarity in the Netherlands.
