Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The layout of WOODLAND and GARDEN around the Slotplaats dates from different periods, respectively the 17th or 18th century and around 1922. The oldest components include the sight line with woodland on the opposite side of the Compagnonsvaart, place-name Slotsingel (1851-1855). The original layout coincides with the construction of a country estate at the time of or shortly after the beginning of peat extraction around Bakkeveen. The so-called Sterrebos behind the Slotplaats was presumably laid out in the early 19th century and may be connected with the construction of the farmhouse in 1818. Among the layout that was realised at the same time as or shortly after the conversion of the Slotplaats in 1922 are the front and rear gardens with a formal layout designed by Gerretsen and Endt from Oosterbeek. This type of layout had become particularly popular again in the twenties in the east of the country at the country houses of textile magnates. As data, these green elements form the most important cultural-historical continuum of the complex.
The visual importance of the sight line appears to have been taken into account later by the construction of a non-worthy farmhouse.
Description
The sight line on the opposite side of the Compagnonsvaart is enclosed at the waterside by two rectangular wooded plots, which form a wing and make the sight line visually appear to begin in woodland. Behind the wooded plots the sight line is initially accompanied by a double row of trees, consisting mainly of oaks, but also beeches, some birches and a wych elm, and is bordered by a dry drainage ditch. At approximately halfway along a crossing drainage ditch, the tree row becomes single. After that, the sight line has young woodland planting on both sides, consisting of mixed deciduous woodland including beeches; at approximately halfway along the end point of the sight line lies open landscape on the north-west side.
In 1922 the architects Gerretsen and Endt also designed a garden with formal layout for the farmhouse converted into a country house. At the front of the country house, the structure of the formal layout with, amongst other things, a sunken basin and an approach drive is still recognisable, and the masonry steps to the sunken area are still present. The planting of both front and rear gardens has been changed. The rear garden of the country house is now a lawn, without borders but edged by a beech hedge, trees and rhododendrons; however, its structure is still recognisable.
The woodland bordering the rear garden, known as the Sterrebos, is presumed to date in its layout from the 18th or early 19th century. The woodland is planted in four, fairly square, compartments with mainly beeches. The woodland is intersected by a cross- and diamond-shaped path layout, as main and secondary pattern respectively. In one quadrant of the Sterrebos younger coniferous woodland has been planted.
Valuation
The layout of woodlands and gardens around the Slotplaats is of general cultural-historical and architectural-historical value:
- on account of the reasonable degree of recognisability of a historical woodland and garden layout from different periods,
- on account of its commemorative value in relation to the former estate on the site,
- on account of a very high degree of structural and visual integrity in relation to the buildings,
- on account of a high degree of typological rarity in Friesland of the main building with an originally formal 17th-/18th and 18th-/19th-century layout and a characteristic garden layout from 1922.
