Inleiding

Introduction

The COUNTRY HOUSE "De Slotplaats" was created in 1922 from a conversion of an older farmhouse on the site. The conversion to a country house was designed by the architectural firm Gerretsen and Endt from Oosterbeek (Gelderland) in 1922, commissioned by the spouses Van der Goes-Van Harinxma thoe Slooten. On the rear side of the preserved front section of the farmhouse from 1818, a striking, entirely symmetrical extension was created. The original farmhouse was established in 1818 by the spouses B.Ph.F.-J. van Eysinga and E.E.R. baroness van Lynden, who were married in 1811. The farmhouse (Frisian: pleats > plaats) belonged to a country estate ('slot'), which was demolished in 1837. On the cadastral map of 1832 this situation is shown: a farmhouse with smithy lies set back from the 'Bakkeveensterweg', behind the country estate. The country estate belonged to notable and noble families, who had considerable interest in the peat diggings in the surrounding area. The building was converted in 1986 into a restaurant with a flat above. The interior of the country house is of secondary importance for the purposes of protection: the basement was deepened in 1986 and internal walls were moved to provide toilet facilities. In one of the front rooms there is a fireplace with a marble surround and tiling made up from later assembled tableaux and borders depicting peacocks, grape vines, animals and putti.

Description

The building has a roughly T-shaped floor plan through the symmetrical arrangement of building volumes. By making use of the overlapping of building volumes and roof shapes, the transition from one storey with hipped roof at the front, via pavilion-like extensions in the corner recesses with mansard roofs, to two storeys under an attached hipped roof for the rear building volume has been achieved. The front facade is constructed in reddish-brown bricks (old, 1818) which are worked in with block bonding in the yellow bricks (old, 1818 and new, 1922) of the side facades. The light openings are all straight-finished, with the exception of those in the front facade which have relieving arches. The windows are multi-paned cross windows with shutters on which an hourglass motif is painted (white on red): in the first storey under a stretcher course, in the second storey under a roll course. The assembled, projecting roof, lined on the underside with beading, is covered with red unglazed Dutch tiles. The roof truss structure of the old section, the main volume, is the highest; the adjoining roof trusses are lower and have shorter roof planes. The roof truss structure consists of wood and iron. On the four highest roof ridge corners stand chimneys; on the apex of the main volume an ornamental roof turret with an octagonal, constricted turret roof, crowned by an unadorned weathervane. In the roof turret a small bell. The front house is constructed of reddish-brown hand-moulded bricks. The east facade has a central entrance arrangement with sandstone moulding and on either side two multi-paned relieving arch cross windows under a stretcher course, with shutters on which an hourglass motif is painted. In the fanlight of the door a wooden glazing bars arrangement with two small flower motifs. Before the door a two-stepped brick stoop. Above the door a commemorative stone with an ornate inscription to commemorate the laying of the first stone on 23 June 1818 by Jonkhr. Rynhard van Eysinga, "aged four years". In the eastern roof plane above the door a dormer window with a tympanum-shaped crown and wing pieces with ornate moulding and on either side two straight-finished dormers; all furnished with multi-paned cross windows. In the south facade of the front house a cross window with shutter; the northern side facade is blind.

The transition from old to new is approximately at the height of the small pavilion-like extensions in the corner recess under mansard roof. On the south side is a loggia with lying elliptical arches with a tie rod, resting on a mortared corner column with sandstone crown. In the loggia an entrance door; the floor is laid in a block pattern of yellow bricks. On the north side of the country house at the same height is a service room. In the short roof planes on the north and south sides is a shallow bay window with a cross window.

The rear building volume stands at right angles to the main volume: it is two storeys high, constructed in yellow bricks with a shallow central projection. In the southern side facade two double glass doors with shutters, under a stretcher course. In the second storey two multi-paned cross windows under a roll course. The central projection of the west facade has a division corresponding to the east facade. In the centre an entrance door; in the fanlight two four-paned windows. Before the door a two-stepped brick stoop. On either side of the door narrow four-paned windows with bars, and cross windows. Above the door a commemorative stone with the inscription: WILLEM VAN REEDE, aged fourteen years, grandson of Jonkhr. HENDRIK MAURITS VAN DER GOES and Lady JOHANNA MARIA VAN DER GOES born Baroness VAN HARINXMA THOE SLOOTEN laid this first stone on the 25th of August 1922. In the second storey three cross windows with shutters, under a roll course. In the western roof plane a dormer window with a tympanum-shaped crown, cross window and wing pieces with ornate moulding. The facades on either side of the central projection are blind.

In the northern facade of the transverse section a multi-paned cross window in the first storey and two multi-paned cross windows in the second storey.

The interior has been altered, but the original layout is globally recognizable.

Valuation

- because of the importance the object holds within the body of work of the architects Gerretsen and Endt, who worked mainly in Gelderland,

- because of the very high degree of quality of the design,

- because of the very high degree of importance of the object for the appearance of the village,

- because of the very high degree of integrity of the exterior,

- because of the very high degree of structural and visual integrity in relation to the landscape setting,

- because of the high degree of typological rarity in Friesland.
